how many miles?
whats the most miles your BEAGLES have put on in a day? in the adirondacks last fall mine put on 14 miles in just under 8 hours. one day this winter they put on 17 miles, that was in a hare pen though. sounds like some of you guys put on more than that but whats the most? (not in a pen) no prize or anything for first place, just wondering.

Running a pack in the morning and a pack in the afternoon up on Drummond. The dogs ran a little over 91 miles in 4 1/4 days. I have noticed that the Alpha reads more miles and a higher mph than the Astro.

Running in Aroostock County,Maine in October we were getting readings of 17-18 miles in a full day of hunting and one day the dogs really pounded and put on 21.That was all out running on some big running hare.

That's probably due to your 2.5 second update rate compared to the Astro's 5. You are getting a more accurate reading than us Astro users are. Unless they make a collar that is real time, the dogs are actually going farther (and faster) than our units say, but it's still pretty close. Most I've got is 18 on cottontail during the season, and thats pretty much as good a running as we can ask for as fast as they hit a hole sometimes.pztrailman wrote:Running a pack in the morning and a pack in the afternoon up on Drummond. Re: how many miles?
I figured it was the 2.5 update too. We put an Alpha and Astro collars on the same dog. The Alpha read 12.34 mi. and 4.99 mph. The astro read 11.52 mi. and 3.88 mph. I don't care about the mileage as much as I know were they are.Smoke'n Mack wrote:That's probably due to your 2.5 second update rate compared to the Astro's 5. Re: how many miles?
My record was 18 on one dog and 19 on the other using a 320. Many times i have been at 12 or 13 for just a morning hunt.

Re: how many miles?
Pretty normal to put 40 miles a day on the hounds on hare. They average around 5-6 mph and we run 8-9 hours at a time.

40 miles is a LOT for a beagle in one day.

Re: how many miles?
I think my record was 15-17 miles or so. anything around 12 for me and I get tired of walking myself with a gun an gear... I walk one mile for every 3-4 the dogs do I guess...
I am not sure my dogs could go 40 miles in a day hunting... If you averaged 5 true mph the whole time out and jumped a rabbit the second you got there, that would be 8 full hours of hunting with no breaks or stopping to jump up another rabbit.. etc. (unless you averaged way faster than 5-6 on a run) my dogs would average 3.5 or so on a decent hunt (320 not alpha) and 40 miles would be 12 hours and there isn't enough daylight in Missouri winters to do that.. from end of November to January there is only 8.5-10 hours of daylight...
I couldn't average 6mph on a deer chase I don't think and my dogs are pretty quick... I don't have hare dogs though and they are easier for the dogs to run fast on from what I hear...

Re: how many miles?
Consider the difference here tho. We run hare. They run faster with far less break downs. Its pretty common for us to run them 12 hours at a time when getting ready for full day trials. At a trial at grand river a month ago the garmins said the dogs fibished the day at over 8mph. The trial lasted 6 hours. You do the math.
