Hey ya'll,
First of all I just want to tell ya'll that this website is great! Not only is it full of info. that helps us newbies out, it's hysterical!!! Lots of fun and facts! And all about the loves of our lives - BEAGLES!!!! Are they not the greatest, bestest buddies in the whole world? We are new at this so please bear with us when we ask questions that may appear to be stupid to ya'll but are serious to us. Well - here goes - we have two pups that CONSTANTLY eat sticks. Now we know that dogs catch sticks, may chew on sticks,etc., but these two are wanting to feast and make meals out of them. They are fed on Purina puppy chow, very well fed I might add, they are healthy, happy and just the greatest little critters, but when we take them running, or just out for walks, they want to eat the sticks. We are worried that this will eventually really hurt them. We can't stop it and don't know what to do. If anyone has some info. that could help us out we would appreciate it so much. Will it hurt them, is this normal, are we worrying over nothing??? Well, thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

Hi, welcome to the board. My guess is they are teething and need to chew something, if they are chewing the stick up real well and not swallow large chunks they should be all right. Are you giving them chewing things like rawhidw sticks? If not get them some big ones and let them chew to their hearts content, this should cut way down on their desire to chew sticks. Welcom aboard!! I'm with Hare Hunter on this one. My guess is that they are teething although I have seen hounds do it for fun, out of frustration and out of boredom. When they start using them to eat Chow Mein....then you will know you have smart hounds. But if they start eating Chinese food becareful because they may also be cat chasers... .

Mine eat sticks and plastic water bottles, and their 2 and 3 years old.

TRY NYLA-BONES, IT IS VERY GOOD FOR THEIR TEETH AND MOST DOGS LOVE THEM. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK GET THE FLAVORED KIND.

Large beef bones make good for chewers but if you keep a group kenneled together, their only good for a fight...Patch

Keep the sticks away from the pups. The dog in my avatar chomped down on a twig and lodged a piece of stick neatly and firmly in the roof of his mouth (from side to side). He panicked, clawed at his face until it was bleeding, and I like to have never found out what the problem was. I thought he'd been stung, was choking or something. A person couldn't dream up the predicaments a beagle can get himself into.

Bev, I'm sorry, I know it must have been a pretty scary experience, but I'm ROF. And you are right, you never know what a beagle will pull off next. I was sitting in my recliner enjoying my supper. Well, I was full, and the plate was sitting on my lap. My beagle (Hannah) came up to the side of my chair and looked at me with those brown eyes.
Now understand, Hannah is on a diet, so scraps are out of the question. And since we began the diet, she thinks she's starving. Anyway, so here is my dog looking up at me, and I reach down and pat her head. So help me, she never even one time looked at the plate on my lap. Next thing I knew, she jumped up and put her front paws on the arm of the recliner, and layed her head against my chin. (This is her way of "cuddling"). I began to stoke her back and the next thing I knew like a flash of lightning her face was in that plate and she was gobbling for all it was worth. LOL.

Seen mine Chompin on somethin in the yard one day! went over and took out what was left of an Energizer AA battery!!! Just a little Sliver left so's you could tell what it was!! Well heck I freaked Called the vet He Said Beagle Right I said Yep! He said Well Has he barfed yet? And Like on Que he Did Black Nasty Lookin YUCK. Vet said he will be Fine Cast Iron Stomach On them hounds Just watch fer bleeding!! Said What kind Of Battery Was It? I says Energizer And He says well that explains it!!!! he was after the Bunny
