any suggestions what is causing this.he is passing blood through his stool.i just have wormed him about a week ago, about a month ago i took him to vet, they checked him and said he was worm free.the reason then i had him to vet was lose of energy and lose of weight.he had a low grade tempature and they give me a antibotic give him and said put him on puppy chow for a while.he gained weight back and is looking good.this dog loose a lot of blood when you hunt him hard,he rips his ears and tail bad.i thought when i had him to vet, he might becoming anemic.i have shortend his tail to stop bleeding from his tail.now i have noticed he's passing some blood through stool.thanks

when my dogs run hard they have red blood in there stool all the time. no worries. black stool (blood in stool) could be trouble.

mine only have had blood as pups from the usual suspects and I had dogs eat stuff they shouldn't have cause it but never from just running. Have em do a fecal check and a urinalysis. It could confirm or eliminate a plethora of possibilities.
If it was heartworms the dog should have had jaundice well before the bleeding....Check his eyes and see. Also will be able to tell you some about the liver function.

I hunted big running bird dogs out west. They would starting having blood in their stool and start pooping a lot. It was suggested by a Kans. Vet ,not feed a dog 24 hours before it is run really heard because the feed would cause intestinal inflammation. Not feeding them worked if you was just going to hunt hard for one day, but on a week long hunt this process would be shot. Do the 24 hr thing and see if it works. I can see were the peptobismo would help because on the enflamed intestines.

You may be right but I've used pepto plenty of times and it states right on the bottle not to use it if there is a darkening of the stool. I know this mainly applies to the pepto causing it but I believe it has something to do with your stomach lining and there is a chance of the pepto making it worse.

I know it says that on the bottle but then again it also is for humans not animals

The wormer i use is for goats
The heart worm stuff i use is for cattle
The shampoo i use on them is for horse's
Some other meds i give to them is for children
So i just go with what works and what some old timers suggest as they have been around the block a few times more than i have!!
