We had a GDB trial at our club on Dec. 7. We had just had the ice storm that week. There was very little running. The winning hound (9 years old and championed out that day) kept the rabbit up for about 5 minutes at a very slow walk with many long checks. However, I ran yesterday (Wed) and the running was pretty good. Kept the rabbit going for 2 hours and caught them off it. The first 30 minutes of this race was pretty sorry, but then things just started to get better and better. We were burning him when I caught the dogs.

Been out several times and the running just stinks. Dogs strike but no circles or just half circles and allot of work.

I thought it was just me. I had the dogs out yesterday and today and they didn't do squat with the first couple of rabbits. They would jump them and they would go straight to a soy bean field and the dogs just couldn't seem to drive them. The running was very hit and miss here in NC the last two days.

We had some of the best running of the year today here in Western NC. I mean to tell ya we had some hummm-dinger runs today, best I have seen & heard in quite some time! We also put a few bunnies in the bag too. And I missed a shot for the first time this season....

Maybe I need to shoot a little skeet?

Hey Darrin is most of the snow gone out your way? We have still got quite a bit in the woods here.

DarrinG,
You only need more skeet shooting if the shot you missed is the only shot you've had all year. I have a shotgun with a "sometimes" bent barrel, the faster the rabbit runs the more it bends - in the wrong direction. It seems to be teaching my other shotguns the same darn trick.

Sat. morning here in eastern Ky temp was about 14, everything on the mtntops coated with a layer of ice. We had 2 or 3 jumps that ran less than 50 yards, one that ran around 5 minutes, then a warm breeze started blowing and the sun came out and everything got wet and slushy. Hounds couldn't find a rabbit after that. Told my partner that we should have stayed home until around 2 pm. I figure running would have been good just about the time that shadows started lengthening. Anyone tried this in gun season with any success? May try it the next time conditions are like they were Saturday.

Things have been rough the past several weeks. Too dry at first- early morning was best and then it would get tougher.
Got snow a little over a week ago in Missouri and that didn't fix things but the condition would be best just about sunset. Poor dogs, just when they were able to start get things rolling, it was time to bring them in.
Snow's off now, ground is moist, ever the optimist, Tomorrow will be hammertime!! Who knows?

I don't mean to dog anyone per say but I am happy that for a change my dogs have FINALLY been able to RUN. Since that 3rd week of October rabbits have been hard to find and in the few weeks prior to the snow we got here in Southern Indiana running had been horrible, but since then rabbits have decided to cooperate and running has been great. Sorry guys but it's about time things got better around here.

I finally had great running today on Friday the 13th

of all days. I took 2 of the older dogs and a pup out and ran 4 rabbits pretty much nonstop for about 3 hours.

I had two great days, last Friday and Saturday. We had a fresh fall of snow on Thursday, and Friday I had to leave him in the woods because I couldn't pick him up. I went home, had supper, came back and he was still on a rabbit. Saturday, again, was perfect.
The last two days, however, have been terrible I went in this morning, bright and early. He kept flagging almost the whole time we were in there. Wandering around, but not starting anything. Have any of you guys experienced that? Where the dogs are just going around and around the same area, as if they're picking up some scent but never starting anything? It's like they can't get the scent sorted out or something.
I find it pretty annoying.
