whats wrong?

i wounder whats wrong. last saturday i was out running on crust. two dogs, one VERY cold nose, one VERY hot nose. for 2.5 hrs. they did quite well on the ice. it started to snow and soon we had 1/2 inch of power. jumped a rabbit, put em on it, they couldn't run at all. 30 yards was it! i saw the rabbit 3 times and put them on it, no luck. happened again with 2nd rabbit so i gave up and went home. FRESH POWER! so yesterday i went out at 38 degrees and soft snow, same problem. out for 6 hrs and no good runs. they couldn't hold em. at all. i will say the snow felt kind of funny (crystal?) but i've never seen any thing like it. like they both lost there noses at the same time. these dogs are not beginners, they both have a million hours on them. ever happen to anyone?

I know what the problem is exactly. The problem is when the rabbit is running in powder it covers its own tracks. The fresh powder falls into the tracks instantly when the rabbit jumps, therefore covering the scent up and making it almost impossible to follow. I never complain when my dogs can not run one in powder because I know what the problem is and its really not there fault at all. I have one dog that can follow tracks just by looking a head and seeing the tracks instead of trying to follow scent. Her talent does not work that well when there is a million tracks, but it is priceless when there is only a few sets of tracks.

I a leaning towards ' Beagleof4"'s response....there are days, no matter what dog you have they will not be as productive as normal. Meaning I have average jump dogs, we hunted last Saturday in high winds and blowing light snow. They jumped 1 of 5 rabbits, they ran all 5. We still took 4.

Sometimes it happens, scent conditions change, sometimes the dogs aren't the same......
