I put vanilla extract on my trap and use an apple for bait....it works pretty well on hare.

What do you need to do to get scent off of new wood to catch rabbits in it, and what do I use to get the scent off?

its all about location, location, location when traping a rabbit, 1st things 1st, find the little trails they travel. 2nd pick u a tap out you want to use, i use the wire cages, 3rd, put you a whole apple golden delicious seems to work the best cut it into several slices, more smell, place it in the trap, set the trap. 4th find a place near the trail open up the grassy area place the trap down in the cleaned out area, then take the grass and fold it back over top of the trap leavin nothing exposed except the entrance of the trap. this makes the rabbit feel at ease it will smell the apple and will venture into the trap and he is caught. you have to cover the trap though or it will not work it makes it look more natural to the rabbit kinda like a cave or a tunnel to it, and it more likly to go into trap covered rather than uncovered. i've caught a few in my day, works pretty good.

i had a couple of my starting pen rabbits get out on me a month or so ago and was running around my barns tormenting the dogs lol... i tried the apples for a few days and the second i put a head of cabbage in my trap it was ON!!!.. i literally caught one and put it back in the pen, set the trap again and within an hr caught another one.. ended up catching all three within 12 hrs.. and i had been trying for 4-5 days to catch them in with apples and carrots... im using cabbage from now on!

rcoff, sweet potatoes and onions do work. i have trapped rabbits for 25 years. not that im the only one that knows anythingt but i have caught a few over that time period. it is legal in sc to trap during rabbit/trapping season. but u cannot sell wild animals that have been trapped. once a box becomes well seasoned and smells like a rabbit no bait works fine to. there are two reasons a rabbit goes in a box... curiosity and shelter. cold rainy nights more rabbits get caught. and a rabbit is opportunistic like most wild animals. if it smells or sees a free meal it will investigate and try to take advantage of it. hence the onion. the smell attracts them to investigate and does lure them into boxes. baiting does work. apples and sweet potatoes catch more possums and rats around here and rabbits will not go in boxes usually after a possum b/c they are competators and rabbits are on the losing end. that is why i suggest and use onions. hope this helps.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, but in OHIO it is ILLEGAL to trap rabbits without a permit. Don't know what your laws are in other states, don't pretend to. Just make sure you check your local laws. A friend of mine got a pest permit to take out a few, but not very many. He had 80 acres of trees, and was only allowed to take out 10 rabbits, as if that would do any good.
Thanks,
Bob

Rcoff... i figured that is what u were getting at just didnt wanna let anyone think what some of us do is illegal. in SC u can actually trap year round on your property within 100yds of your primary residence. but u must use a rabbit box or havahart trap no snares or leg traps. happy trapping, hope this thread helps

show me kennels....people i know of and myself burn out our boxes or smoke them out with pine straw or hay. just be careful not to get the box too hot or it will distort and the doors wonts work right sometimes.
