Food Questions

I have a few questions about feeding Beagles.
What brand food do you use and how much of it do you feed to your hounds when they're most active? Of course, all hounds need different amounts, but on average, how much do they eat on it.
Also, when do you switch from puppy food to an adult food?

I feed diamond dog food year round. In the summer I feed the yellow bag and give all dogs 1 1/2 cups per day. In the winter when I am running more I feed diamond green bag and when running heavy will increase food to 2 to 2 1/2 cups per day. For puppies I feed diamond puppy food and I feed it to them dry, I just keep it in their pan around the clock so that they can eat whenever they want. I will normally keep my pups on puppy food until they are about 8 months old and then I switch them to diamond green bag. Some dogs have slow metabolisms and don't require a lot of food to get fat so you may have to make adjustments for them.

I feed Canidae. The most I eve had to feed to my largest Beagle (who also has a propensity to be on the thin side) is 3/4 cups in the morning and evening. During less active days or warmer months she eats less than that and keeps in excellent condition. The formula I feed is an all life stage formula, so the pups and adults gets the same bag, just different amounts. I usually cut back to their adult ration based on their condition, not age.

I've fed the 24-20 Diamond for the last three months. As far as the looks of the dogs and their energy level, along with the great price($12) I get on 50 lbs. I'm sold on Diamond.

I know it's getting a litle late for this, and we should have talked about it early this summer but I just learned of a couple more hounds that passed that were checked and found, their kidney's were burnt up by being kept on high protein food for years.
The high protein/fat food is hard on them, especially through the summer, winter's not near as bad...
Ask any vet what he recommends for summer/winter feeding, protein/fat, and let me know what he says...Patch

I'm guilty of keeping them on the high protein during the summer. I realize now that it's not good for them but I didn't think about it until I started reading posts on several websites about it. I will say my dogs look rock-solid, but maybe their insides (kidneys) don't look so good. I use Diamond. Good price, seems to work well. Recommended by my friend that got me started in beagling.

Chief,
You keep your ear to the ground, but not to close to where the herd is grazing, if it smells, stay away from it ;) ...Patch
