coyote attack
me my wife and our five year old were soloing one of my males this evening and also had my two 4 month old pups.this area is polluted with rabbits so he had one rolling right out of the truck.he was on the rabbit for about 15 mins or so when i seen him right on the rabbits heels.rabbit entered a honeysuckle thicket and dog was right behind him.just inside the thicket i heard a squeel and thought he had caught it.a few seconds after the squeel i heard a yelp and he come running back at me.he ran out in front of me and my wife at about 10 feet and the yote was nipping at his heels (literally).luckally i was near or i beleive the outcome would have been much diferent.i hollered at the sob and he tucked tail and ran away.had me shook up pretty good but the dog was still wanting to hunt.my wife grabbed our boy and bolted to the truck.looked my dog over and only seen one small speck of blood on his back leg and seemed to be fine.

Have had issues continually here with them in one area. Glad your hound was okay. They get you rattled when it happens. That is exactly why I carrry the Keltek 22mag auto, I won't be without it again when running.

Re: coyote attack
Carry something small that can use .22 shorts that just make a small pop so no one will here it!!! If not that route get some big treble hooks and hang them in a tree with something yummy and theory is they will be hungry and nature will yake care of the rest

On a different note...not sure what you should use, but I'd make sure you clean the area where you saw blood very well and possibly think about a dose of antibiotics. I might be overreacting, but those yotes can carry some nasty stuff in their saliva. I'm sure someone else on the board here can set you in the right direction regarding that.
Re: coyote attack
Yotes dont breed untill around jan. That is when u need to be more carefull as it is probally the alph and he will be back. It is a teritorial thing. The beagle is hunting his ground.

And what do you do when someone's dog goes for that treat?

Re: coyote attack
Glad that dog is ok, and more importantly your child and wife are ok!!
I would def keep an eye on wound, also hope your dog had rabies shot.
I used to have problem in one area I used to run with feral dogs running after my dogs, I used those pressurized horns used at ballgames, also used bear spray once. They both worked well. Another idea you may want to look into for quite use, is handheld crossbows, think they have upto 80# draw.
good luck, but if there is a pack of them in there, I would be careful as will be a matter of time for them to attack again.

Re: coyote attack
i normally have bells on my pups because the garmin is still to big for them but didnt put them on last night.also had a walking stick, and and my wife and i were talking not ten feet from where he came out of the thicket.ive been running here for years and never had any problems but a year or so ago we started seeing more coyote signs.had never seen or heard them in there till yesterday.it is so over ran with rabbits i wouldnt have thought that we would have a problem with them trying to get a dog.what do you guys think the odds of this happening again could be.

Re: coyote attack
After our first incident we had four more encounters, tends to make them brave. Be VERY cautious as it is a territorial thing and they will do it again!!
Re: coyote attack
I have a running spot that I used to live close to and I would run it quite a bit. It had PLENTY of rabbits, good cover, etc. Well, when I moved several years ago, the coyotes moved in. They put a hurting on the rabbit population. I do not run it nearly as much as I used to. I told the farmer about the coyotes and he knew they were there. He had some guy come in and trap/snare. Apparently, this guy is very good at what he does. He trapped 12 in one season in this place. I am sure he did not trap them all!! It is amazing to me how fast the coyote population can grow. It is almost like they are cats instead of dogs.

Re: coyote attack
Just pushed a coyote out of a corn field when I drove into my running spot. It's raining here and I guess its a good day for them to hunt.
