Removing Dew Claws

Post by Hot Nose »

This is my first litter and I want to remove the dew claws off the pups. My question is do I remove the enitire joint the dew claw is attached by? Or do I remove the nail up to just behind the skin? Thanks in advance.

Clip it all off flush with the leg skin.

i have found getting a pair of really thin plies of some sort that will get completely behind the entire knuckle, squeeze down if the hole joint pops out then put just a bit of tough skin of some sort into the knuckle hole then take the same plies lets off the skin and let the glue into the hole and apply pressure for a few seconds. if the knuckle does not pop out snip everything off with a pair of sterile toenail clippers flush to the plies.
using the plies i have found will stop blood flow to the stop you cut before you cut that way almost no bleeding after. also the sooner the better, the older they get the more they bleed.

use the dog toe nail clippers. They will let u get right up on the base of them and just clip them and sit them back in. Momma will do the cleanup!!!

we use hemostats.get them as close to the leg as possible and clamp down.the nail and everything should pop out and them just scrape it off with your fingernail.if there is any bleeding which is hardly ever,a shot of super glue does the trick.but im sure everyone has there own method, thats just mine and it works well.

I do the hemostat and surgical sissor thing also pretty much just like these guys. 1 day old- clamp as far back as possible leave clamped for 30 sec or so ( this stops most if not all bleeding , take clamp off and cut off with scissor then add a cople drops of glue -- 1 week old I take mustach trimmer and shave the glue off some may have just a small sore where you shave it clean all cuts should be most healed then I spray with bluekote and like some one else said give them back to mom she'll take care of the rest -- I also do fronts and rears for those that have them
