Could be a birth defect, or genetic. I had a litter with of 6 and 3 had crooked tails, no idea why.....

In the 40-50's there was a breed of beagle that had lots of Champions that had those tails and it shows up today occasionally.
Probably a throw back to them.

I think what you may be seeing is that some pups are born with badly bent or deformed tails which is pretty common and so the breeder will ow the deformaty.....DH

You are right Randy, it was the Pearson Creek Beagles I couldn't think of ! They sure could run a rabbit. Beagles all over the USA bred to them and it was not uncommon 40 years later if someone bred two dogs that both had Pearson Creek in their blood, they would get some or even one with crooked tail. Would be interesting to see if these pups sire and dam both had it in their line.

Several years back I had a female born with a slight "crook" in her tail?
She ended up being a very nice dog so i bred her.
In her 3 litters, she always had at least one pup with a crook.
Then I bred one of her grandsons and had a pup with a short little bob tail.
So i decided, though nice rabbit dogs.....to stop breeding anything from that original female.

Back in the 80's I had an older friend that had a male beagle with a 3/4 or less tail and every litter of pups he sired he would throw at least one pup with a bobtail. Some would have a tail that was only an inch or so long just like you would bob a cocker spaniel. I bred to this male one time and my bitch had 6 with 4 being bobtail but I didn't keep any of this blood. I like to see them flashing that tail when hunting

I will occasionally bob one a inch or inch and a half due too the fact they beat em to the bone and it hurts em. Most band em i just take em to my vet, for 30 dollars it aint worth me fooling with.
