bells on beagles

i have watched alot of videos and the beagles have bells on them. what is the purpose of this and were is the best place to get them

Im not sure but ive also seen this and was told it was to be able to locate the dogs better if they roam a lil farther away than most other dogs that hunt real close? I was also told you cant use em on you're dogs in field trials lol otherwise I wouldve gotten some a long time ago as my dogs tend to travel to hunt.

Some people say the bells help keep the coyotes away but I don't know about that but I use them so I will know where the dogs are and I will tell another hunter right quick that the rabbit don't wear bells so if you hear a bell in the briars it is not a rabbit so don't shoot

I've heard everything from keeping coyotes away to helps jump rabbits. Some claim the rabbit will not sit as tight with a bell jingling near by. Some use them to help keep track of dogs. I believe there is some truth to all three reasons to one degree or another (not sold on the yote theory but I'm sure it doesn't hurt). I have tried them a few times but don't like 'em. Mostly for 2 reasons. One is for whatever reason it seems to have a negative affect on handling (I'm guessing the dogs don't hear me calling as well at distance with a bell jingling in their ear) & second, the dad gum things drive me batty

I used to use them but like crow noticed that at times it affects what they can hear. I mostly noticed it when a dog or dogs would be out a ways on a rabbit and the bell jingling in their ear can interfere with them hearing the other dogs. I would have to get them to stop and listen more often so they could hear the other dogs and go hark in.

I agree with Bunnyblaster. The bells also makes it difficult for them to hear their handler.

As i have heard it, when a coyote would run in on your hound and go for the kill by grabbing the neck and shaking the hound the bell is supposed to scare it off. Why anyone would want to hear that darn bell going off all the time i have no idea. Now guys dogs have bells on them with e collars and tracking collars that tell you how far your dog has run and at what mile per hour he has run. Some of you guys keep adding weight to your dogs neck and soon were gonna have to shove weights up a dogs ass just to keep all 4 of their feet on the ground.

i agree with you i try to keep the load off as much as possible. the whole gps deal is up in the air for me. i dont need to know how many miles my dogs run or how fast they do it.... i can hear my dogs running and can tell when they come out bloody they ran there ass off.

little e i could not agree more, when you get them on the tailgate and their eyes r half shut and bloody tails and you have heard them singing their music for 4 or 5 hours thats all the info i need. thats job well done in my book.

we used to use bells till we found mr garmin.we only used them for a locator.helped with over handling the dogs.i never noticed the dogs having any problem hearing me.as far as needing to know how hard the dogs ran garmin doesnt tell you that.you could have a pack of crap eaters and it will still give you same info,distance ran and mph.if you ask me there the best thing since sliced bread.

you can only get them 1 day a year, which is Dec 24th. You have to sit on your roof and wait for Santa to come by and take em off the reindeer when he goes down your chimney. Take your chances and leave the bells to the reindeer. Your dogs will thank you.

My dogs don't seem to mind them. I keep mine on the e-collars and when I pick up one of my collars the dogs go crazy because they know that usually means they are going hunting/running and I don't seem to have a problem with my dogs hearing me or the other dogs.

It may very well be I just didn't give my dogs time to adjust to them. Maybe after they get used to them they don't pay them much attention. It just seemed mine didn't handle as well with them as they do without. Then again I only used them a time or two. I couldn't stand them long enough for either of us to get used to them

Bells have never bothered me or my dogs. I wouldn't go anywhere without them, infact in the summer when I was running in cornfields we had coyote drop in on us. From then on I went to wearing this big gaudy bell on my belt and I rattled it every so often. Lol. Yote never came back so maybe it scared em off... Don't know just bells on my dogs collars give me a piece of mind I know where there at in thick brush.
