Need some thoughts and opinions asap
One of my male beagles is a real energetic dog. My father took him hunting this morning and he ran great. Brought him home and talked for a bit with some friends then took him out the box yo put him back in pen and he was weak and acted tired. Thought he was wore out from hunting. Few hours later went back out to check on him still moping around kind of like in a depressed state of mind. Still has an appetite. But just wants to lay around and he never does that. Said he seen some stool in pen that had blood in it and looked like red jello. Also he kind of acts like his back legs hurt him to move them. What should I do? Should I take him ti the vet? Any thoughts? Please help.

•Parasites, like hookworm or whipworm
•Bowel cancer
•Anal sac infection
•Bone pieces or sharp objects
•Tumors
•Twisted stomach
•Foreign objects
•Ulcers
•Overfeeding or eating food that has gone bad
•Allergies or toxicity
•Colitis or proctitis
•Bacteria or infections
•Liver or kidney failure
•Addison's disease
•Enlarged prostate
if its the twisted stomach it could kill him by morning.

Did he eat before he ran this morning? If so a heavy stomach could cause the twist.

Dont think he ate this morning. However he did eat this evening and also drank water. So no sign of loss of appetite. But he seems ti be a bit tender in his front legs. Right front more so than the left. could this possibly be just a pulled muscle

I woulden,t take any chances, I lost the best two year old on Christmas day, from what appeard to be twisted stomach. he was the best that I ever raised. he was acting similear to what you described. good luck.
Re: Need some thoughts and opinions asap
I wouldn't wait. I lost a good female a couple years ago. Same thing, went running & was fine, got home & she was dragging around a little. Still eating & drinking fine. Next day or so same thing then got more weak so I took her to the vet but was to late. Kidney failure from anti-freeze. She had gotten into it around an old chicken house without me knowing it until afterward. Not sayin' yours got into it but I waited & wish to this day i hadn't.
Re: Need some thoughts and opinions asap
Beagles are not a breed that are prone to a twisted stomach, aka, torsion. Not that they can't get it, but it is certainly rare. The fact that he is eating is telling me that he does not have torsion. In fact if he did, he would probably already be dead. Dogs with a true torsion cannot throw up or defecate, period. Pretty obvious it is most likely something that ocurred while running. The red stool may indicate some broken blood vessels in his large intestine, if it's light and pink its nothing to worry about, but if it is thick and dark it is a need for concern. My guess is he ate something he shouldn't have or really wrenched himself somehow, fell from a height or ran hard into an object. Keep a close eye on him and he'll probably be acting like himself in a couple days. Even though he may not be feeling well, the fact that he is eating tells me it can't be anything too serious. I'm a bit old school and do most of my own doctoring at home, but through trial and error I also know when it's time to make a run to the vet. No one knows your dog better than you. Take the advice, but ultimately it's your call.
Re: Need some thoughts and opinions asap
Oh, one other thing. It may be that he is wormy, probably tape. Ran good, but a little more lethargic and sore than usual after a run with the red stool. Good chance he's got some parasites that are dragging him down. I've often noticed red stool like that when they have worms, especially shortly after a run, I think the worms move around alot in the intestines when the dogs are excersizing causing friction and thus ultimately, blood in the stool. When he's feeling better in a couple days, give him a good worming.

A friend of mine called me about a young bitch I gave him doing the exact same thing
after a hunt. He waited to take her to the vet and 3 days later she was dead.
She died as soon as he got her to the vet, this was just this past Friday.

The way I look at it if your dogs mean enough to youto feed them $100 worth of dog food, they should mean enough to you to take them to the vet for $100. Im not saying every little thing needs a vet but this could be serious. Ive stiched my own dogs, shots, worming and even amputated a toe in the field once. But like someone else said you know your dog best, do what you think is right, but this dog would have been to the vet last night if it was my dog, JMO!! Good luck hope hes ok.
