Black Gold Ingredients Change
Have any of you who feed Black Gold checked the ingredients lately? And noticed a change? Here are the first 5 ingredients in the black bag 26/18 "Performance Blend" - meat meal, corn meal, corn gluten meal, ground wheat, poultry fat preserved with mixed tocopherols. I paid $28.84 for a 50# bag of this stuff today because I didn't have time to drive down to Anderson, MO to get my usual Simon's Choice, Hunter Blend 26/18. I started feeding Black Gold 5 years ago to stay away from corn filler and I recall, Black Gold 26/18 had zero corn meal. When a friend started distributing the Simon's Choice feed I went with them because the ingredients were nearly identical to those in Black Gold and it was much less expensive. Has my memory failed me or has indigestible corn filler been added within the last year or two? Right back to Simon's Choice for me.

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
I fed Black Gold for 2 years and I dont recall it having any corn or corn filler in it either, Dogs loved it but when it went from $31.02 to $39.63 for a #50 bag within less then a year I went to Sport Mix for $22.xx #50 bag and now they changed their bags to #40 for the same price ....

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
I noticed the size of kibble was larger than it has been in my last 2 bags will have to take a look. I've got some old bags laying around.

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
I found this on a search. It explains why corn is used in dog food.
(copied from a food comparison site)
High-quality food should not contain the following:
Food fragments. Fragments are lower-cost by-products of another food manufacturing process such as brewer's rice (a waste product of the alcohol industry), wheat flour, and rice flour. Most foods contain at least one fragment as makers attempt to keep the food affordable. Beware of a product that contains several fragments of a single food or is the main ingredient.
Meat by-products. Using an animal by-product (or more than one animal by-product) for a food's main protein source is indicative of a low-quality product. (i.e. chicken by-product). Animal by-products are any part of an animal not acceptable for human consumption. Ingredients listed as by-products are not required to include actual meat.
Corn products in dog food. The presence of corn products - particularly if they are high on the list of ingredients - may indicate that corn has been used instead of a more expensive alternative. About 25% of the corn produced in the U.S. today is genetically modified. Corn is more difficult to digest either by humans or dogs.
Corn gluten meal in dog food. Corn gluten meal is a concentrated source of protein that can be substituted for costlier animal protein. In many bargain dry dog foods, corn gluten meal provides a large proportion or the total protein in the food rather than more digestible forms of protein such as meat.

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
I fed Blackgold dog food for years; and it has always contained cornmeal.
I spoke to the guys at Blackgold some years ago and they told me that
they used cornmeal because it was more digestible than ground yellow
corn which it is but still just a filler.
When the price is almost $30.00 and in some places over $30.00 it isn't
worth the money for what you are getting. I started feeding the diamond
naturals dog food, no filler and paying $32.00 for the Chicken and rice
and $33.00 for the extreme athlete.

I went the same route also, every time I went to buy feed the price kept changing. Pretty soon the price to quality ratio didn't seem to match up imo. I went to Diamond myself.

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
The last time I looked a bushel of corn was about $9.00 that is way high & everytime the corn prices jump so does the price of Black Gold & other corn base dog food. One thing you can bet on if the price of the corn per bushel goes down I bet the dog food will not.
Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
I have been feeding the blue bag. I was getting it for $28.50 until my hound supply store told me last week when his distributor stopped carrying it. Now they best they have is pride pro series in the orange bag. So I guess ill try it for a while.

Re: Black Gold Ingredients Change
My dogs do great on the black. black gold back but the thing that is scaring me is the color of the food...
One bag seems really dark brown and the dogs stool is really dark colored and then the next bag its a light brown and the stool is really light and chalky...
It sees they should be uniform right? I have kept my last three bags in case something happens to my dogs. Its just odd.. but man they look SOOOO dang good on it
the price is gettin ridiculous. I know a pallet here is 800 and makes it 20 a bag. wish I could get some guys to go in on one with me down here and knock about 8 bucks a bag off.
