Young dog

Post by gun runner »

I have a nice young male that is bread right on top and bottom,He is about a 1 and a half years old.But he will not go with the other hounds and when you shoot the gun he really get nerves. He will not run off, stay at your feet. Time to get ride of him or just give him more time,he was only hunted a couple of times before i got him and the gun did not scare him and no one shot over him .I had him about 2 months now and take him every saturday and any other free time,i really had high hopes for this male.

That one is a tough one but since you own him I would just give him a little more time. I would like to think most any dog that is worth a hoot would have come around for you by now but I have heard guys say some just take a little while longer. It can be frustrating but it'll only cost you time and feed to find out. Some guys will tell you to cut your losses and find another dog........neither is a right or wrong answer........it's all in what you are willing to do and how long you are willing to wait to make your decision. But remember with each outing the odds of him coming around just get less and less.

As for the gun thing I had one young female that was fine around me. I sold her to a guy on trial and he told me she was gunshy after 2 weeks of him hunting her. She ran to the truck every time he shot the gun so he brought her back to me. I walked out to the kennel with him, put her in the kennel, grabbed my 20 gauge and fired off a few shots less than 30 feet from the kennel. Not only did she not run and hide or freak out but she come up to the fence to see what I was doing wagging her tail the whole time. Now either the guy was full of $h!t or she just wasn't comfortable with him for some reason...........I don't know for sure.

Thanks for giving me more ideas on it i really going to try to work with him alittle more and keep away from the gun untill he is running alittle better.he is really bread right i got his sister and she is doing great every time out its alittle better. I just hate putting time in on a dog that your are unsure of.

One thing I've learned is when in doubt give them a little more time. Then as you get more experience with training pups/young dogs you'll get a better idea of when to let them go and find another. Each dog, each beagler and each situation is gonna be different. It may work out for you this time and not the next. The one thing you can't miss out on though is the learning experience of giving it a go. Now on the flip side I've been right where you are and really not wanting to waste my time. All I can say to that is looking back there are a couple of dogs I wish I would have held on to for a little while longer.

I'm sure you'll get responses from a few more guys with a ton more experience and years under their belts than I have. That's just the little bit I've experienced so far. The guys that have been down that road a few times will no better what to tell you to look for and what they might do but like I said a little time can't hurt. I've always believed in you can learn something from anyone and any situation.........even if sometimes all you learned was what "not" to do the next time around.

Gun runner, I would not shoot over the dog unless he is actually running a rabbit and opening up. When they are running a rabbit, either by themselves or with a pack there mind is in another world and you can shoot over him, they hear the shot but they just don't care when they are intent on running a rabbit. A few times of shooting over him while actually running a rabbit and they usually get used to the shooting but not always. As far as him going with the other dogs I would kennel him with another dog, let them bond and then run them together. This usually will help. then gradually add more dogs for him to run with or kennel him with the other pack but I would start kennelling him for a good while with one dog that you plan on running him with...Hope that helps...deerhost

me personally if it's not showing any intrest at all and its a 1 1/2 old, im getting rid of them. someone might be able to get something out of it but it sounds like he doesn't have much time to hunt and needs something thats gonna start easy. someone told me a few days ago the key to getting better dogs is #1. be smarter than the dog & #2. be ready to cull. i agree with him.

I would like him to be like like is sister but he is not, iam not scared to cull either.I guess he is what i want in a dog withs looks, bark and bloodline, but not the drive i like in a dog. Like hillbillyridgerunner said the dog needs more time then i can give to make him right.

Don't do like I did. I had one that acted like that and I didn't put the time in him and sold him so cheap that you could say I gave him away. Now two years later I regret it every time I go in the field with him. It just takes longer for it to click in some than in others but each to his/her own.

I just got word about a pup I sold. I sold him around eight months old. Didn't hunt hard and was slowly progressing. We had a bad flood and starting this pup was hard. He did start, but just didn't have the hunt I wanted. Now I have heard he is a hunting machine, jumps a lot of bunnies and can flat put 15-20 yards on some pretty good dogs without having to get rough.

I regret it as well, but crap happens!!
