Dog A barks and gets on the clock 30 seconds later Dog B jumps the rabbit and we are off too the races!! Suddenly the race ends dog C has caught the rabbit What do you score Dog C ??

Nothing, unless they were in a check. If they were in a check he get 25 pts...

Dog C get 10 points for the check. End of race. Jumps and strikes are open after you move the dogs. Anyone else got a better answer? LOL Hope I am right if not correct me. LOL cya, Paul

I'm with blu tick beagler. Dog C gets a full belly and no points.(LOL) You only get points for catching a rabbit on the jump or in a check.

I guess it does depend on format. Mr Blu. was probably talking LP rules. I believe hunter was talking PP rules.

I agree.......the dog would get no points. No check points could be awarded unless the dogs had broke down for the required time.

dog a gets the strike and dog b get the jump dog c gets nothing unless thier is a break down.

Is the 25 points correct also for the check if there was a 15 sec breakdown? It has been too long since the test and yes I was confused with PP rules on awarding the check. thanks, Paul

So dog C just happen to be in the wrong place on the strike and jump (understood, not all dogs get jump points). Yet, his ability to catch his prey on a dead run by scenting is not rewarded? Does this make sense?

that is the way it is in LP.

also in LP if your dog runs ahead of the pack for the whole hour and doesn't have but a few short breakdowns it doesn't get any points since your dog didn't have any 15 second checks. No points for running solid.
I don't like that, but what is the alternative? I sure don't know.

There has to be rules and you need to bring a dog to a trial that fits the format and more closely fits the rules.

In some of the older formats unless the rules have changed, the dog C mentioned above would get a minus for chasing the rabbit to catch it, thus leaving the line at some point and interfering with the run, line, or chase.

Well John, you've seen my dogs in action so you know there is no danger of them catching any rabbits.

However, seems to me that dog C should get something for gosh sakes. I mean, he did do what he is supposed to do didn't he? Overtake his game!

Oh well, another flaw in the rules I guess but none of them can be perfect.

Alswamper it did not say what hound c was doing while hound b was hunting for a jump,as far as we know hound c could have been off hunting somwhere else or standing there waiting for hounds a & b to find him a rabbit to run.I like that a hound gets credit for jumping(hunting)

Nor did it say hound c caught this rabbit from running the scent,he could have been standing around and b & a ran it over top him,these are just different things that can take place.
This is a little pack question so by those rules hound c gets nothing based on how the question was asked.

But look at the good side of this,hound a got credit for finding the track and hound b for the jump.

Alabama john wouldn't it be nice to have a trial with a points system to score strikes,jumps,all checks(any break down of forward progress,with no time limit) speed and drive,and not get faulted for getting a little ruff fighting for the front and if they get the front and leave the pack not get picked up.Also to hunt whole time, no time frame and final cast be shot over any quitters to the truck,i like the fact that a dog gets scored on individual accomplishments,i need to wake up now

Here's the rule quoted from the rule book, just for an fyi:

"a. If a hound catches a rabbit during the open check time, the hound shall be awarded 25 check points. If a hound catches a rabbit when the check time is not open, the judge shall call dead track and no check points shall be awarded."

However, I was reading about the jump points and I'm not clear on whether or not the jump points should be awarded here. Maybe you guys can clear it up for me. Here's the rule:

"2. A jump only occurs at the beginning of a chase. No jump points shall be awarded except at the beginning of the chase."

So, the question is what constitutes the begining of the chase. Is it as soon as the strike dog is put on the clock or once the rabbit is up and moving?
