Dog ate the guts out of a rabbit today. Do you guys deworm after this? I've been told I should because of the parasites carried by rabbits. Thanks.

Make sure you get a wormer that kills tape worms. Rabbits carries tape worm lava in their guts.

I would worm but I worm once a month anyway.

sidebyside, If you want to worm them now, It won't hurt anything, but I don't thing it is necessary and I wouldn't do it just for that reason. Wait until the end of your season and worm all of your dogs. Your primary concern is probably tapes. At the end of the season worm them with something that contains praziquantel. I use equimax horse wormer Once a month after the season is over to kill tapes and prevent heartworms.

I've never worried about it. I also use the horse paste , Equimax , every month. I have never seen anything in my dog's stool , and they always look healthy and have plenty of stamina. I believe if you don't worm every month , then yeah you may want to worm them after eating the guts.

gwyoung, how come you don't do it during the season? And the only reason I do is because during hunting season is when my dogs are most likely to get into gut piles and what not so I've always done it then too. I don't know the right answer to this one so I was just curious.

If you do not have your dogs on a regular deworming cycle, then by all means treat for worms now. Deworming does no harm unless the dog is sick or debilitated. I would suggest deworming all dogs in the kennel once each month, year long. The incubation period for worms is about 3 weeks and meds are cheap when compared to the health of your dog. It is far easier to prevent the investation than to cure it.

Our dogs eat a lot of guts. Catch rabbits. We feed them the heads raw and whole, twist them off and throw to the dog needing encouragement or a reward. They love them.

Don't worry about it and worm after season.

bunnyblaster, I don't care to use medicines including vaccines any more than is necessary, for instance, after dogs reach two years of age I never vaccinate them again the rest of their lives. ( except for rabies) Worming dogs for tapes during the season is pointless to me, they eat a lot more gut piles , dead rabbits, mice, birds, deer steak, etc; than we think. Generally, tapeworms should not be strictly targeted unless you see tapeworms in your dogs.( my opinion) Furthermore, most people get all bent out of shape when they see a tape worm. Big deal! I seriously doubt if anyone on this board ( myself included) has ever saw a tape worm infestation large enough to cause a dog a problem . If your dog has tapes it will not hurt him. unsightly yes, should you worm him when they are noticed, yes, will they hurt your dog, no! Worm him after the season because he has likely been exposed, and when you see them after that.

I give ivermec every month .1 cc per 10 lbs. How much of the exuimax do you give the dogs??

jakeboy, I assume you are giving the Ivomec, for heartworms. If you give the equimax it will serve as a heartworm preventive as well as removing tapeworms. you can give one click on the syringe if you want without harm. I give a little less than that. I squirt out an amount equal to a small marble. If you use the Equimax, it wont be necessary to use the Ivomec.
