what would cause white sores on a dogs tounge and mouth,,,,,,will worms do this he is under weight,,,,,,,,,jeff

jeff, I'm no vet, however at first glance I would say your dogs' condition sounds a little like Thrush. Technically it is a form of Stomatitis, which basically is an inflamation of the mouth, gums and tongue. Thrush, is actually a yeast stomatitis. I read that it is an uncommon condition seen mainly in dogs receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics that destroy the "good" bacteria and allows the growth of yeast. You said that your dog was under-weight. There might be an inderlying condition that has possibly brought on this condition. Thrush also occurs in dogs with compromised immunity associated with chronic illness. The mucous lining of the gums and tongue are covered with soft, white patches that "grow together" to produce an adherent white membrane. Painful ulcers appear as condition gets worse.

Obviously, you should check with a vet, but it sounds like there may be a tooth problem that might be a contributing factor. This is something that you probably won't be able to treat at home if it is in fact thrush. The problem suggests a good cleaning of the mouth, gums, teeth, and a prescribed antibiotic. Good luck with your problem, hope this may have shed a little light on the subject, and I hope for a speedy recovery for your dog.

thanks for your help red briar,,,,,,i just figured it was something to do with worms because the dog ate a coffee can full of food,,,and is this contagious,,,,,,,jeff

I'm not sure if Thrush is contagious or not. I couldn't really find out any information that led me to believe that it was, but not sure just the same. As far as the worms go,...usually you will see signs something is going on when you inspect their stool. Via bleeding, runny or very loose, mucous, worm fragments, etc. I'm not a leading expert on worms, but I have never really heard of anyone diagnosing worms through a problem a dog was having with it's mouth. If it is in fact thrush, the dogs mouth is liable to be very sore possibly resulting in malnutrition or weight-loss due to being painful when chewing. Either way, I don't think I would let this go on too long. In my opinion, I believe I would get the dog to the vet in short order to be safe and to avoid compounding the problem.

a friends dog got this and it was thrush.he got it fron eating litter box tootsy rolls.it went away on its own after removing the litter box.

well im giving him a 1/2 cc of penn every 2 days ,,,,these sores are real white and the sixe of pencil erasers,,,,,,,thanks for all your help , i just hope the penn will kick in and i do think it will help dramaticlly,,,,,,

thrush is a type of fungus.penn will not help.

the pup pased away his tounge swelled up and i guess cut off his air supply,,,i should of checked him out better before i traded,,,but was told they were ok,,,my lose i guess

just think about it....a trip to the vet could have saved this pups life....but instead it had to suffer...dont rely on these boards to solve all your hounds health concerns....thats is what the vet is for....this pup died due to its owners ignorance....not its illness

high ridge , dont really care for you calling me ignorant, the dog went to the vet and was giving medicine, i got the pup sunday took him to the vet monday so how could it be the owners ignorance, i just asked the question to see if any of you knew of anything to do till i got him to the vet,,,,,

well, first off...you never said you took the pupto the vet until your last post....2nd....i wasnt calling you ingonorance...just your actions...
sorry for your loss....and the pups.....
your post started on the 13th....pup died on the 15th....not once did you mention the vet....if you did take the pup to the vet on the next day,,,,then who prescribed the penn. treatment?
this isnt really worth much...the situation has passed,,,,if you have any poor feelings about the situation then you will have to dealwith that yourself...just hope someone reading this post learns from it...
