Looking for old cottontail bred beagles

I'm starting to believe that all this hare breeding is hurting the quality of dogs for us who run cottontails. Just curious if anyone out there is still breeding the old cottontail type hound. I'm also curious if anyone else is noticing a difference in the quality of hounds since the explosion of the hare breeding.

Tony,

Some guys have pushed the limits of how fast a beagle can successfully run a rabbit. Overall I don't think anyone is hurting the breed. There are guys that breed just about every speed imaginable, from a very slow walking brace hound to a head high swinging hounds and everything in between. Once you find the speed that suits you there will be a group of guys that like the same speed, and trials set up for that speed.

Contact George Pierman, he is from Clio area, he frequents this board, someone might even have his contact info. He is a good guy and has the more conservative line running type dogs you refer too.

Look at the Gay line. Bred for cottontails and they do a great job for me. The dingus stuff works real well too. I tend to favor the progressive pack style hounds, to me, these hounds are true cottontail hounds. JMO. :D

My HOF hound Dutch is cottontail bred. He was successful in both big pack and little pack. He has a ton of hunt, very good control..... Yet he had a lot of speed. He isn't getting any younger but he is still viable.

Information wise his pedigee includes old cottontail greats Like HOF Spicers Blueback, Ellison Ridge Redman, Big Red Tracker, Spicers Ginger and some of Cres,ss and Mcutcheons old line.

Dingus is the foundation for most harehounds, doubt he ever saw a cottontail. His stuff is great for cottontails, so I don't see how this 'harehound' hurt the breed at all.

Never said he hurt the breed hookset, just merely said his line works really well for cottontails-especially when crossed with the Gay line! ;)

Hey Fleetwood, not really refering to you or saying anything bad about Dingus, just the title of the post is how Harehounds are the demise of the cottontail dog. I don't see how it hurt that much.

I have seen Rake run alot, and he is definitely a cottontail dog. Big nose, good line control, medium to upper medium speed. He is a solid rabbit dog.
