How many of you have
or have seen some.
that could just pound a bunny???

pro's and con's?
at this point and time, i beleave if there are bred to run they will run.
the only hang up i have right now is how quick can they adjust to the cold after coming out of the house to hunt .
how much will it effect them.
or will they pay no attintion to it .

You need to talk to Steve Shipman. His Cola dog will pound with the best of them and she stays in the house.

I have a house hound that you couldn't tell the difference out in the field...he can smoke a set of tracks all year round. IMO, the pro's : I get to enjoy his presents all day long, and keep a "hands on" relationship with him so in return his handling skills outside the house are second to none.
The con's I get to enjoy his presents all day long!(we know how hard headed a beagle can be) and like you said the winter transition. Last year my males testicals lacked the protective coat of hair on them he ended up getting pretty rough looking down there. But only seemed to bother him before and after hunting...
All in all if there bred to be a rabbit dog they will be just that!
After that its just as simple if you want a hound in the house or not!?

Owl Creek,
As Dave has said, I get the best of both worlds with our Cola female. Come hunting season let me get out of the house without taking her along. She cry's like a baby until the wife calls and tell me I better turn around and come back and get her or else!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!
The coldest of weather doesn't bother her at all. After a long day in the field we get to share the recliner together and watch a movie!!!!!!!
Couldn't ask for a better dog.

Hello
Just thought you guys may enjoy hearing from someone who has three beagles in the house and runs hare all winter. We run in deep snow and are out in temps at zero or sometimes below. The winter conditions don't seem to bother the dogs at all. The only problem we have is when it is real cold and the snow is dry your dogs with the best nose have to take the lead. The cold and deep snow have more effect on the handlers than the dogs!!

My Smokey dog stays in the house sleeps on my bed .If my truck moves he is in it even goes to church with me but stays in truck. some of the kids cant wait to get out and pet him after church. only time he ever sees the inside of my dog box is if he gets all muddy while out hunting. And he has been my best dog for 6 yrs.he`s 7 yrs. old now and maybe loosing a step but still has the brains to get the job done.He may not be the best dog in the world but he`s the best to me.

I have 2 that stay in the house. They both run a good rabbit. Last winter my tri-color fell through the ice. She got herself out and continued hunting. I watched her close because i was a little worried, but she showed no signs of quiting.

When I was a boy, we had no air-conditioning and not much of a TV. We never thought much about it cause we never knew any different. Summer time you sweat, winter time you froze. It was the way it was. You acclimate to the environment your accustom.
Today we have air-conditioning and 250 channels on the TV. Lots of distraction to keep us from getting the work done. It is the way it is... :ashamed:

Does a hound feel the effects of living along side us in comfort? do distractions enter it's mind to hinder putting forth the extra effort when the chips are down? I don't know, I only know it would be hard to go back to the "good ole days".... :baby:

I don't like pets, I still miss that dang cocker spaniel, Max... :(

Of course mine are in the house and I think they do pretty well in the field. They are patch hounds and they can pound a rabbit. They are hard hitting, fast running, and sound like a whole pack of viscous rabbit killers when running a rabbit. But when my mom comes to visit they will sit at her feet and let her pet them for as long as she wants to. She says Copper is the sweetest dog...

I enjoy having them in the house. They handle well and I have heard that this may help with that.

The only problem with having them as family pets is if something happens to them I have to answer to my kids, my wife, and my mom. This can make me a bit anxious when I turn them loose. A few years ago Max was lost on Drummond Island for 3 days and I had to leave without him. It tore me up and then I had to tell my wife and kids about it when I left without him, but then we all felt great when he was found and returned home.

My don't seem to mind the cold, but I am very carefull with them in the heat, expecially since we got ac last year.

I do not think having them in the house affects there hunt or hunting style in any negative way as long as they are ran enough and fed properly.

At one time we had eight Beagles in the house and when I would come home off the road I had to fight to get in my own bed until I built my Kennel and then they went up into the Kennel and I kept a male in the house he was my buddy. They all hunted Great and I was out to prove that house dwelling hounds can become Field Champions too. It wasnt until I moved my Windy Hollow's Mr. Mooney into the kennel He became FC. Windy Hollow's Mr. Mooney. He got too used to a constant 70 degrees and he couldnt handle the heat. I also had air condition in the Kennel that I later turned from 70 to 80 degrees. It takes the humidity out of the air but still has the temperature to keep them used to the heat. Beagles are not designed to run in 3 digit temperatures anyway. :)

Got 3 that stay in the house and the wife spoils them rotten. But if I say the 3 words"Whata ya think?" them dogs are at the door and howling their heads off cause they are going running.I run them in the mornings when it's hot(we have AC) and they'd kill themselves if you let them keep running.Don't seem to mind the cold and I've run them in temps down in the 5 to 10 degree range(which they love).I think if the dog has it in them, they'll run no matter what. :D

I have all 7 of mine in the house too. I think they run alright for spoiled house dogs. Taz likes to sleep in a laundry basket with a blanket in it. Her brother Ralph prefers the recliner, must be a male thing.
