?SHOT TO BRING FEMALE IN HEAT?

I have a female that has been 13 months since last heat. I would like to breed her and get some pups before trialing season starts back up. I thought about giving her a shot but didn't know the pros and cons of it. I was just wondering what your experience was with the shot. If I should do it or just let nature take its course with her. I don't want to mess her cycle up no more than it already is.

Some bitches give almost no sign that they are in heat, unless there is a male with them. You could probably do a google search and find some information on the product you have in mind.

I called two vets today. One said they would do it, but they would have to hospitalize her and give her iv's.(that sounded a little extreme) and it would cost around $250(very extreme). The other vet said they would not do it because it was dangerous for the dog. Something about kidney damage and something else that it would affect. That was all I needed to here. I am not going to do it now. I never did like interfereing with Gods work. He never needed my help before I am sure he don't now.

By any chance did either vet give any reason why she would be so long coming in? I have 2 females that haven't been in heat for over a year and can't find out anything that would cause them not to come in. Would love to know what is wrong. Hope you have better luck with your female. Thanks Patrick

My expierence has been that some females will not come in without a male in the same pen, the problem with this is you have to pay very close attention to them. An old dog trader taught me this years ago.

I talked to an ol' boy today that has a really good female and the female will not come in heat he has even took her to the vet and got the shot and still no heat. It would be sad if some of these good ones dont come in.

I think it makes a difference when females are ran really hard and it causes them to not come into season just like a lot of Olympic gymnasts and other female athletes that train so hard...some of those girls don't have hit puberty until much later then normal

Me and my Father-In-Law have had the same porblem. I found that as said earlier that if you run them hard and keep them slim they seem not to come in season as much. I have also noticed that I skipped breeding on several younger gypes using the older proven ones that they were the one not to cycle like they should. When you do breed one it comes in every six months. I had luck putting the gype in a pen with a male, putting weight on her, and not running her. She then came in and after being breed her cycle was regular.

My females haven't been run in quite a while. I will try putting a male in with each of them, hope it works.
Thanks for the input guys. Patrick Cable

Don't use any chemical to rid mold in your water.
Put a strange dog in the pen, male or female.
Pee through the pen wire yourself at feeding time and on her if she gets close.

Back in the 70's i took some females to the vet and got them a shot to make them come in heat. The cost was five dollars apiece. I remember that the vet gave the shot to the dogs in the hip and he said it was painful because the females screamed in pain. All the females came into heat and were bred but none of them took.

I had a pup that didn't come in til she was 9 months old. She didn't come in after that, (unless it was a silent heat). Then, at just over 2 yrs, she came in full bore, swollen, bleeding. & flagging. At this time, I had a male dog there. So I,m wondering if there is something to this with havin a male around.....
