Butkus fans!!?

Post by Casey Harner »

I got a question for you all? Do you guys feel that Shooter has passed the torched over to Butkus yet? I mean with Shooter still breeding do you feel another Butkus is out there? The thing about Shooter and Butkus is that Shooter produces dogs that can or is better than himself. That's a good line of dogs in my opinion.

So my question is this, has the torched been passed or will there be another Butkus before Shooter passes on? I have heard tons of outstanding things on Butkus.

He is doing real well for himself thus far. He is out of two OUTSTANDING hounds with outstanding reproduction pedigrees. It doesn't surprise me that he is really producing winners from an early age like he is, JMO. I don't know if you can replace the original just add some more logs to the fire with a good one to mover forward with. My Butkus pup is coming next Friday! I will see if he turns out, I am excited about him. He is red and white and will probably be named "Buffalo Creek Frankie".

You need to remember a stud is only 1/2 of the picture. FC greenbay Wiley brought the other 1/2 to the table for Greenbay Butkis. From what I understand she was an outstanding hound.

I had one very knowledgable beagler tell me that Wiley was the BEST female in her size he every saw. This guy was a trialer, had FC hounds and knew what he was talking about. He has gone on to his reward, but was a wealth of information!

Agreed that she may be the reason Butkus has it all!

I have never seen Shooter run but I can say that Butkus has it all in my opinion... And he has reproduced the likes of Paw King... If u look at Green Bay Kennels website, Joe K. states that Paw King is a better snow hound than Shooter. The Wiley blood in Butkus is just as important to me, if not more than Shooter blood in my opinion. For what it's worth... I'm a FAN!!!

I had a male littermate to Butkus, he was a good one. Unfortunately he was hit on the road, which pretty much sucked. He was 14 3/4", he had awesome line control and was all rabbit dog. He was not the fastest dog, about a 7, but was very good on checks and double backs. I have 2 young males out of him that are doing a nice job. There is also a littermate female that is FC Green Bay Moxy Foxy.

Will the McVay's run Butkus for anyone to see him go? I've got a female I've been thinking of breeding to him, but I want to see him run before I will breed to him. Does anyone have a contact number for them?

John-Pa,

If you are interested in breeding to Butkus, call Don at 740-502-9515... They are a pleasure to deal with and will be happy to let you see Butkus run. You will not find a more friendly and honest beagler. I consider it an honor and a privilege to know the Sundown guys!

Not to cause any arguments, but I have been curious for a while now.
Green Bay Shooter
Green Bay Wiley
Green Bay Sandi
Green Bay Blue Bay
Green Bay Paw King, etc.,etc.,etc.

Why wouldn't you guys go right to the source?

I have a friend who has a Butkus male (not from Joe), and he isn't worth a d*mn.
My point being, the female is just as important and even more so, the guy making the decision in the choice of matings.

I think there should be a little more credit given to the guy making these successful crosses.
Here is a breeder that is selling young champions only to have another right behind it that appears to be even better.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have seen Paw King run, up here in winter, and he is quite the impressive little hound.

Just my .02 worth,
Swamp

I agree with Swampman, why not go to the source. Greenbay bred, raised, started and hunted all of the dogs, he knows them so I would have to believe it when he states which one is best. I certainly wouldn’t state a dog is better than another dog on snow or any other terrain based solely on a trialing record. Especially in the 13” class, winning 4 out of 4 trials sounds great, until you find out that there were only 6 to 12 total dogs in the entries. But running them for endless hours and for countless days, and then evaluating them from that is another story. Greenbay has done this and I am sure that he knows which is best.

Another reason to go straight to the source? I helped start a Shooter pup, it did not have any hunt and would blow a hole thru the ground while the other dogs got the check and were gone, about a 5 on speed. As much as we read about Shooter on here and other places, he went and bought another one that was advertised. It was a little faster, but still lacked hunt. He ended up giving both of them away. But, it may have not been Shooter’s fault. The females were just random females that were taken to breed to Shooter. Shooter has produced what... 8 or 9 field champions out of 70 to 80 breedings? {Thats just a guess, AKC has the true numbers}. Greenbay himself only uses proven females, which is why he reproduces better as a kennel. Females are half of the breeding. The mother of Butkus "many say" is the best female they have ever seen. He is just a good breeder that does it right. We just got a Butkus pup, we are looking forward to find out what exactly he will make, but we know the mother of this one and we expect great things, time will tell. I do like Butkus!

I'm going to use the dogs Swampman posted. The names are Green Bay, but the breeders of these dogs are different and pedigrees are also. There are a lot of different bloodlines in these pedigrees. Here is where I found my informatation, you can look at this for yourselfs.

Green Bay Shooter = NLPC IFC Melasons Ranger Dan x FC Pine Acres Mollie, Breeder : Keith H Weyers
Green Bay Wiley = (S) SR Donald Butch (D) Busca Bound Minka Marge, Breeder : David A Martin Jr
