With gas 4.29 a gallon food $27 a bag and me working seven days a week I've almost had enough. Its getting to expensive to trial let alone run much. For those who choose to stay in my question is what makes you? I absolutely love my dogs but it's getting crazy expensive.

Being A road salesman I feel up gas tank everyday.That hurts gas bill has went up about 200.00 a month the last quarter,with no end in sight fortunately my running spots are close to my house.Running dogs is the only hobby I have as long as I can keep job I'll run dogs.

My answer is a cheesy one but a good one.

Why do you work 7 days a week?

Because you want to have a good life and pass these things along to your family. That is why we run dogs. It is a good life. It is the reasons why we work. The reasons why when people's kids ask to go the first time it makes them swell with pride. Without the joys in life why would you want to wake up and go to work?

That is why I fish, have boats.... dogs.. guns.. and friends. Because Family and Friends.. and the smiles and tears is all life is. Money means nothing so make it and spend it.

I know exactly what your saying. We work every Saturday its mandatory. Sunday is my choice.

Because I love hounds and I will always have that in my blood and heart. Why stop trying to make something work that you love to do....I wouldn't be able to see my buddies if I stopped trialing or hunting... Dogs has created so many friendships with other beaglers, why stop doing that....money will come and go, but friendships and memories will never fade.

Many years ago when I was an apprentice working 10 hrs/day, six days/week a journeyman told me to remember that we work to live, not live to work.

Only problem is I'm still putting in 10-12 hour days, just 5 days/week though, and working on the farm on weekends.

Still run hounds nearly every weeknight though!

I tell my wife that running hounds is how I unwind and relax from all the hours of working.
She did think I was a little nuts when I spent a week on the Island running hounds, aaahhh relaxation, come on October!

Its simple for me..I have to have something fun and relaxing to do to deal with the frustrations of paying what I do for gas,feed,etc..When Im out with the hounds enjoying a race Im not thinkin about work,gas,feed bills or anything even remotely negative if anything it takes my mind away from all that stress and allows me to have a good time.In the end its a small price to pay for a few hours being happy.I could spend money on way more and probably still not get the joy I do from the dogs.

Im not a quitter. Ive thought about it from time to time. I may even stop breeding some day, but I will always have a few beagles.

Well for me the expenses are really out of control.The closest hunt is an hour and a half one way..I regularly drive 5 and a half hours one way.My running grounds are 50 miles round trip.Which I do almost every day.But I love running dogs.Thats it.Most of the time I am by myself ,but its watching the race,watching a good one at work that makes me do the sacrifice.The hunts are fun and I like the competition but its the solo runs that only I get to see that are the things that really keep me going.

Josh, I feel your pain. Hounds have been a part of my life for so many years that I'm pretty darn sure that my life would never be complete with out them. I'm very blessed to be able to turn my hounds out of their kennels and run all I want without ever loading them up.
On the other hand, I have had to slow down a good bit on my trialing. With my home club and closest being a two hour drive, those are the only ones that I can afford to get to. I have made a lifetime of friends by trialing and won't get to see them as much, but I guess I'll have to make the most of it when I do get to see them.

When things get rough u find out in a hurry who the true houndsman our. I raised two great girls never gave up my hounds. I run AKC for years never thought i got a fair shake but very easly could had been all me was very young and thought i should win everytime how time has changed the way we think. In all still never gave up my hounds. Got barred from UKC by some very crooked fellows but never gave up my hounds. Went back to ARHA where i started had great sucess even though things are getting a little rocky now but still will never give up my hounds. Going into PKC now. Have gave some great dogs away to people i think our houndsmen to find out they truely do not love it like myself. It has to be about love of something my is the beagle dog. I have been addicted ever since i was 12 years old and will have them until i die. I like to trial but thats not why i feed them. I JUST LOVE THE CHASE. FEED them and every now and then pat them on the head and you will never hear them complain thats got to be worth something.

So when there are people who are loosing jobs,cars,Homes can't hardly put food on the table,trying to makes ends meet and just making it from week to week.THEY are not "TRUE HOUNDSMEN" HMMMMMMM have to think bout that for a minute.

I have struggled and as a kid we went through just that. This is not the first time in this country that we have struggled and yes i have always had a beagle. Hell sometimes thats the only way we ate meat is want we killed. Believe if youwant or not and my defination of a true houndsman is just that my opinion so do not get so offended if u believe u are a true houndsman then so be it. What is your defination i am eager to here it.
