Jump dogs are valued big time by a hunters, during rabbit season the tough conditions a jump dog is in need.

Does field trials promote or value jump dogs as much as they should?

In ARHA progressive pack if a dog jumps a rabbit it gets both strike (20) and jump (20)points for 40 points. This is a good headstart when checks are only 10 points!

Otherwise a hound might strike for 20, and another hound could jump it for 20.

Progressive Pack If a dog refuses to hunt for 5 consecutive minutes of any cast it will be disqaulified

I attend AKC SPO trials here in New York and at any trial I've been too if any dog is just standing around not hunting it gets picked up and it's out. It may take the judges a little time to figure it out but when they realize a dog is just standing in the path waiting for another dog to start a rabbit, its out. At least Thats what I've seen. Usually at theses trials the dog that wins is the dog that can keep the rabbit up and running, and picks up losses on the check and can drive the rabbit with out blowing the front and loosing the rabbit. That to me is a Hunting dog.....DH

I love a jump dog.Not a start dog but a rabbit off the end of the nose JUMP DOG.Some formats dont reward a dog as much as they should for a true jump.I like ARHA for giving30 for a jump.Jump power is something getting harder and harder to find in a hound.I think its mostly because alot of beaglers breed to dogs that have titles in other formats that really dont award a dog for a jump.I like good track power as much as any one but I love to watch a dog get a track, keep his mouth shut, and work it hard till the rabbit comes off the end of his nose, then drive out.You can never count a jump dog out of a cast. They can get 40 in a split second.Up in the heat of the day when rabbits are scarce and wont run big the jump dogs will shine.LONG LIVE THE JUMP DOG!

i agree with rock pusher. 4 jump dogs & 1 track dog will make a good pack the other way around is not that good when rabbits are scarce. but then agin we all want dogs that can do it all great :D

I must disagree about AKC trials giving credit to jump dogs or promoting hunting/jump dogs.
1. Dogs are continually encouraged by handlers to go into the brush.
2. Handlers go into the brush and try to jump rabbits for the dogs.
3. If a rabbit is seem 99% of the time the dogs are put on the line, and often one pack is picked up on a rabbit and the next pack is put on the same rabbit (SPO, or GDB)
4. "hunt" is only required when there is a lack of game. And by "hunt" it means you can't stand in the path in front of the judge, if a handler has a hound that lacks hunt and he's smart he works the dog away from the judge so it stays out of sight.
5. Since an attempt is made to keep dogs together they are often worked in the same block, one dog barks the rabbit runs out and 4 dogs behind it, who gets credit for the jump?? Nobody, score is based on sight not sound therefore if several dogs are in the block who knows who started it.
6. Dogs that could not jump there own rabbit in the wild win AKC field trials, I had one of those dogs.

Other formats do a better job giving credit to dogs that jump rabbits, and hunt hard.
This is just my opinion. I own AKC registered dogs, and trial my dogs in several formats, one being AKC SPO. There are a lot of good parts of AKC trials but rewarding or promoting search/ hunt or a true jump dog is not one of them.

your post is right on! there is NO credit given to a dog that jumps
a rabbit/hare in AKC trials
as matter of fact the rules state that " no credit will be given a dog thats starts the most game" wording might not be 100% but that is in the rule book
also states a dog will be judged on hunt if they dont hunt or interfere with
a hound that is trying to hunt they WILL be eliminated this is hardly ever enforced
and a lot of this type hound is winning in AKC trials we see it at almost every trial
YES the trials in NEW YORK and elsewhere Both SPO on Rabbit and Hare
and in LPH
The working of hounds is a Farce! we have handlers RUNNING thru the woods screaming and yelling like a bunch of Banshees and expecting a hound
to work the brush wondering why the dogs are walking behind them on a trail
because that is where most of them 'WORK their hounds
Lets set on a stump and let the hounds work see where the hunt is!!

Thank you Rock for answering my question. I feel some formats water down a good jump dog. Some formats its all about the dog that runs the rabbit but not the that jumped it.

Take this for a example. A dog jumps three or four rabbits in a Midwest trial. The dog that jumps all three rabbits doesn't get brought back to the second series.

I also feel its hard to find a jump dog these day. Only one true insane jump dog I know of.

Not a trialer with my big dogs or little dogs but I will tell you this. If I need to do something to get a race started other than turn my dogs out I need different dogs. Never heard of guys kicking brush or making noise to make game move for their dogs? If a dog has the desire to run a rabbit bad enough it'll make a good jump dog if you dont go to finding game for it and make it lazy. The little female I have right now will go through every brush pile she comes across and clean out every briar patch in sight and if she wouldnt she'd be gone.

If it wont jump me a rabbit,I wont feed it.No matter how good it runs a track. If it stays here,it needs to do both, jump and track power.

Being disabled and unable to do much walking my dogs better get thier butts gone and find a rabbit. cause I aint going to jump too many sittin onthe tailgate.that being said I have a couple that seem to jump the biggest part of the rabbits.
