A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Seems like the Vet costs have been shooting through the roof over the past few years, my annual vet bill has almost doubled.
For one beagle to get a rabies, lyme, lepto/distemper shot and the required heartworm test is $140 annually. The heart worm test is a real kick in the seat, you pay $40 per year per dog for an exam, then give the dogs the preventative 12 months a year...what good is the Heartguard if you have the dog on it all the time and still have no confidence that the dog doesn't have heartworms???
Recently I took one to the vet because of a large bump/growth on her face that was an open sore and wet with blood, the vet diagnosed it as an ingrown hair....$57 for the exam and 7 days of Cephaflex.....2 weeks later there is no change in the dog. I call them back up and they ask if I want them to do a biopsy "surgery" so they can get more info....$250...are they freaking kidding me
What do you guys pay per dog for regular annual exams? What do you have done for vaccines?

I do all of my shots and worming myself. You can go to the feed store and get your shots that way and buy your own wormer.
That has saved me money over the years.

Took a new dog to my vet a couple months back. Had the heartworm test ($23) done since it was a northern dog (no heartworm preventative done during winter months), Rabies ($10.00), and examination of teeth and opinion on teeth cleaning and possible tooth pulled ---- Walked out paying $33.00............had I had the annual booster shot done, cost would have been an extra $15.50 but since I buy 25 does trays and do my own yearly shots, don't have that cost to deal with.
I keep healthy dogs and use common sense. Why would you keep them on heart guard and need to have them checked every year.
I don't get a checkup every year, I'm not on any medication, and I'm 68. I use the same philosophy on my dogs. I feed em, I worm em, and I have the Vet give them a rabies shot. IMO, anything else is a waste/ripoff.
I would rather save the money for my grand children's education.

I've only taken a dog to the vet once, decided I would never go back.....
Ivermectin is sold over the counter.....if your dog does get heart worm, they just give them a higher dose of ivermectin and see if they live. (Big SCAM)
I get my Rabbies shots from the Amish. Give them the 3 year shot.....$1.59 each.
Antibiotics can be purchased over the counter. Pennisillin works best for infection. The direction will tell you how much to give.
Annual shots are excessive. I give a puppy shot at 6weeks and a booster at 1 year. Dont give anymore shots after that.
Keep a clean above ground kennel, keep them free of parasites, feed a quality feed, plenty of exercise.....never had a problem.

I work with a guy that has a son who has a lab. I know this is not a beagle but thought it was worth posting. He carried it to the vet and had an annual check up. Dog had heartworms. He had been buying his heart worm pills from this vet for several years. Not sure what brand or pills he used, I will find out and post but the company that makes the pills is going to pay for his dog to be treated for the heart worms.
When we lived in the city, it cost us nearly $50 for an office visit and rabies shot. There's no way we could afford the beagles with those costs. Now we live in the country so things are a lot cheaper. You can buy shots at the feed store. A yearly 7-way and rabies booster cost about $15.00. If you go to the vet, he charges about $20-25 for the two shots, but no office visit. It costs $10 for a heartworm test, again no office visit charge. A 20cc bottle of generic canine heartworm medicine (I think it's an ivermectin blend, not sure) costs $38. Bruccilliosis testing is $28 and you get the results the same day. We took our border collie in once and the office visit, a steroid shot, and antibiotics cost $50. We take care of all the minor first aid by ourselves. The vet is always willing to give advice over the phone.
Heres some numbers for you. $150,000.00 for 8 years of education, $200,000.00 to get started in a clinic, $2000.00 a year for licenses, $25,000.00 a month for inventory, $1000.00 a month for insurance. Keeping my dogs healthy and in the field, PRICELESS.
does a vet really need all that school? sounds like most people do thier own vet work. ive never been to college but i can give a dog a shot as well as anyone. lets use common sense worm regularly, keep fleas & ticks off feed good food, up to date on vaccanations & exersize. dogs should be ok
I know a local town Doctor that originally was going to become a vet. He looked at what he need to learn to become a good vet. He had to learn about canines, felines, birds, reptiles, and etc. Then about the perticulars within each breed within those. He said he decided people were easier to treat and diagnose then animals. I had never thought about it that way.
