i think my dog may need his tail took off, need help!!
i got a bluetick male that has excellent hunt and is a real nice hound all around
hes a major tail slinger and he comes in with blood all over him
i started noticing that at the first of the hunt he really gets after it does a real job and hes running with some really strong dogs and hes doing some good check work and has good foot has turned on the rabbit out of the pack several times and is a very sensable houndwith no extra mouth
but as it gets later on in the hunt he starts falling out of the race and gets throwed out bad
and then everyonce in a while he will roll out like he got a check and will go a pretty good ways and nothing will honor him
like i said hes a very nice dog and very straight but he turns in to a different dog later in the hunt
im very convenced that his issues has to do with his tail losing blood
he looses an evtremely large amount of blood ive seen it to almost the point of driping off his belly because hes had so much blood built up on his sides from him slinging his tail
i know ive heard of dogs "bleeding out" from there tails
just never witnessed it before
i think hes just getting delutional and out of his head an weak and just different things because hes loosing so much blood
just wondering what your guys thoughts are on that does it sound like hes bleeding out to you
and if i need to take his tail off how is the best way to go about taking care of that
thank you
josh

Re: i think my dog may need his tail took off, need help!!
i have one that I traded for and thought id gotten taken in the trade. several had seen him go and told me what a great hound he was and when i ran him for one of them they couldnt believe it was the same dog. he hunts real real hard and i had noticed how bad his tail got beat up and bloody. we banded his tail and wormed him and he was a totally different dog. Now on the banding i will let you know how that works out. It was done over two weeks ago and I had read on here that you could run them with it on. This dog lost his the first time I took him out. His tail had dried up already so I figured it would fall off after a while. I started watching it and it didnt falll off so we rebanded last weekend. Still there. I know it works but I wouldnt run them until the tail came completely off.

Re: i think my dog may need his tail took off, need help!!
never seen a dog get any blooder than the hound josh is talking about, ive owned him and have seen him come back at the end of a hunt to get in the truck and wait for under a minute to be loaded and the ground under him be pooled with blood, ive seen great things out of him in big races, won a 56 minute race in a cast in witch him and one other was the only two dogs left standing, but i did notice if i ran him 20 hours or so a wk was better than running him 50 hrs witch i done alot. id call the vet josh and get their thoughts on this it is a real possability and it wouldnt hurt to go ahead and doc his tail,i would its not that much for a band, and would be a good investment in this hound because hes worth the exspence to try it. his tail in the least could set up an infection, and he also looses a ton of blood from his ears. good luck ol paw and keep us posted.

No question in my mind what should be done. Give me the dog for free he's worthless.
Doc the tail man no big deal.

Take your kids huntin and you wont have to hunt for your kids.

take it off. just not totally sold on the banding yet. i will probably have to go to the vet and have mine removed after the banding. it is dangling now but still not sure the bone is going to drop off.

Re: i think my dog may need his tail took off, need help!!
I banded a couple last spring, best thing I could have done. If he is down on blood he will do some real stupid stuff, an old timer up here in my neck of the woods told me to put some molasses 1tbs in there food helps with the iron loss due to blood loss. The first one I did I just put the band where I wanted it and ended up with the bone thing just hanging there, I let her run a couple of short runs and she beat it off. I learned to shave the tail clean before putting the band on and find the tail bone joint put the band on the joint and the tail falls off clean in no time. I have one to do in the morning before I go out. Hope this helps.

josh u need to lay him up and give him some b-12 shots to build his blood back up my vet told me that a dog can bleed out quick but it can take months for them to build there blood back up to normal...
