i heard from a friend of mine which is the president of a beagle club that ARHA is going to start measureing every dog at every hunt starting JANUARY 1-2012 this came straight from FRED HAUSMAN at the world hunt.he said that some guy's are going as far as shaving the hair from the whitthers before they have their dog inspected so they can have that extra 1/8 to 1/4 inch.i love a 15 inch hound but it's going a little far shaving dog's.....

He also said you would be able to have your dog offically measured and have a card showing its size instead of measuring before the hunt. All dogs would still be subject to challenge at the cast sites just to keep all breed inspectors honest. Can you imagine showing up at the world hunt next year and trying to measure close to 700 dogs, what a nightmare.

If docking a tail is not disqualification for entering a hunt, I don't see what shaving a hair off the height is going to hurt. The main goal is to stay within the limits and have the best hound on the ground, after all...
Else they'll have to amend the rules to read,... 15 inches, "hair on" or "hair off"...

That's right !!! Are they measuring the hair or the hounds ? Why not save all the trouble and let the judge make a judgement call as to the hounds eligibility to run the cast . It seems to work well in every other situation .

I think it's good for the breed. Get rid of the oversized hounds and keep beagles looking like beagles rather than walkers.

i heard the same thing gabe but also heard that they couldnt get the card until a certain age,i also agree with dixiedog i have 15 inch dogs and i will not have any body's dog measured i don't care how big they are,but the rules are the rules.and if u get measured out then u have no right to get mad,besides we all measure are dog's and we know when were pushin the bar...

it is fun beating bigger dogs, kinda like you did something everone said you couldn't do.

on that note, i don't think there should be a size limit. the dogs are getting bigger b/c of their diet and health not b/c they have walker in them. people in general are about 8 inches taller than they were in the hundred of years ago, it is the steroids in the meats that are doing it.

whats next i guess they will be scratching dogs for swinging out of the check area or running to much rabbit, probably have the judges riding horses and we will all be stepping in horse manure trying to catch our dogs, its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog

i have a Loko Go Red male that measures 16in...i had him measure last year at a hunt he was oversized...some of the guys that i know told me to shave the hair but i wouldn't i consider that to be cheating... just my opinon...so what i did i bred him to really nice bitch that was smaller aboout 13 3/4in maybe the pups want go over they are 7 1/2 months old right now only time will tell....

I've run AKC large pack and SPO......I like the big dogs too but I agree with stricter rules on measuring. I just hate to see 17" dogs slipping in. If a gunner wants to run 20" beagles I don't care but what I'd rather not see is the 20" dogs in 10 yrs replacing the true 15" hounds.

Dixie , there's nothing about LP that's going to better the breed ... The reason I asked you the question is because I had a hunch
that you hadn't ran in LP . Some LP "beagles" don't look like beagles others have other breeds up close . SOME are too long , too rough ,
too wide in the check , too mouthy , back trackers , short ears , crooked legs , bad bites and all these are allowed to run . If they want
beagles to look and run like beagles they may want to change over to AKC . I'd say NKC has much bigger problems than oversized dogs .
I won't even get into the flaws & variations of measuring a beagle this post .

I think when the AKC starts measuring more accurately, we'll get more dogs under 15".

Of the few AKC trials i've been to both LP and UBGF, you can probably add an inch and still measure in.

ARHA seems to measure most accurately, depending on the club of course.

I've seen dogs in ARHA measure out....especially after winning the first round! "ouch"

I run both large and small pack option....I agree big dogs do get in and they shouldn't but ignoring the height rules in any class isn't going to better the breed. I would like to see everyone clamp down on that.


I've been to many large pack trials where the pack ran very well together, the wide running dogs, dogs that lack hunt, back trackers, babblers,.....all are allowed to get in but will be pulled once they've been given a chance to settle down and still exhibit those bad traits. Most trials I've been to in LP have a poor running pack until it's been wittled down to 10-20 dogs..then it's usually relatively smooth.

The short ears, crooked legs, and bad bites are pretty much always going to get in....they are flaws but there isn't a solid standard by which to measure their eligibility.

I have attended one large pack trial and the friend that I went with ran a male that is probably 16.5 inches when standing in a natural pose. The two gentleman that were doing the measuring both had a little wise crack about the dogs height, but guess what- he measured in. I think that he was the last hound measured that morning and once we made our way to the pen entrance where the rest of the dogs and handlers were, just about everyone in the crowd had comment about the dogs size, but guess what he ran in the trial. Point being it didnt seem like anyone really cared.
