What is wrong with my dogs paw?

I noticed my beagle licking her front paw constantly. I found that between her first two toes the skin is all red and raw. There is no hair between the two toes anymore.
I couldn't find any thing to cause it. No thorns or anything else.
Any idea before I take the dog to the vet?

seems most folks think it is fungal. Probably had a cut or thorn initialy and went down hill from there.
I got some spray that should take care of it if that is the case. I'll try it for a week.

Bag balm works wonders too. If the dog needs to see a vet I won't hesitate to take it in but if it's something minor like that and I'm not quite sure about it I'll use some bag balm for a day or 2 and in most cases it will clear up.

I got some permectin and prolate lintox solution. The breader, Don Potts, told me spray it on any skin problems like this so it should work. I dipped her feet in it.
I usualy don't use it because after reading about it and the smell it seems pretty toxic. He told me always spray the dog before and after hunting and then about once a week. If you do that you don't need to use any advantage or similar stuff. Just give them heartguard and de-worm occasionaly. I'm thinking about using it for a while because advantage multi is so expensive.

you can spray bitter apple on it to keep them from licking off any meds. you can find it at the pet stores.

Do you keep this dog in a above ground pen. I started having this problem when I added the above ground pens. I still have cement runs and the dogs on cement don't have this problem. The best I can tell about it and consulted with five different Vets that have never seen it before, is the wire spreads the toes and causes a small tear or crack, and the reidue from the urine or feces gets in it and causes a topical infection. Some times there will be a small pimple like bump also . I am appling Vetricin tId, Twice a day and move them off the wire for a while. My wire is one and one half inch square coated made for above ground use. It should clear up in about 14 days some times sooner.I think the reason the Vets didn't know what it was or what caused it was back when this first started about ten or twelve years ago this type wire just became popular before that it wasn't used that much. hope this helps.

The spray seems to be working . Looks a little better today. I don't keep the dog in any sort of pen she is a house dog. She probably hurt it in some way in the field initialy.
THe small patch of dirt where she does her buisness see's alot of urine and feces. she likes to go nap in it and run thru it which is nasty. Maybe that gross dirt got between her toes too.
