Why does it stay in your kennel?
I wonder what makes it possible for you to stomach feeding that hound one more day in your kennel. Good bad or indifferent. I would like to know what things you like in a hound and what make you get rid of one.

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
I don't feed dogs that lack hunt, backtrack, are mouthy, or are disruptive in the kennel.
Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
They must hunt, circle a rabbit consistently, and make me happy to take them to the field. No barking in the kennel unless there is a varmint trying to eat them. In addition they have to outperform the younger dogs to keep their position on the team. Also it helps if they out perform my buddies dogs.

I can’t believe nobody has yet been completely honest and said; “Because my wife and/or kids fell in love with the pup and they said it is a keeper!” lol… almost everybody has one… bad part is when it turns out to be your best one.
Honestly? A person will always find somebody that will tell you the faults and reasons why you should get rid of any dog. I have friends in the UBGF, SPO & Large Pack. Also in the ARHA, UKC and guys that have nothing but back yard grade dogs that they gun hunt with. Many of them with different speeds and styles and opinions of what a good dog is.
I keep what pleases me, that simple. Because just like on this board “including myself”, in our own minds we are right. Guys from different formats will gladly tell you that the “other dogs” from the “other format” is junk, because of this or that, even if they are all champions. Most guys that are hunt club members or everyday back yard gun hunters {which out numbers trialers by the thousands} will tell you if it is “registered”, it can run but it won’t hunt or jump. You can’t go by fad, format or the flavor of the week.
We have to keep what pleases us. {except for that "one", as long as the wife and kids go along with it…

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
All dogs have faults!.......So, from the minute a pup is whelped I start looking for faults.....the good traits are easy to see, you don't even have to look for them.
Once I have identified the prominent faults in a dog I asses whether or not they are major or minor......whether they are getting worse.......whether they irritate me or not.......
Sometimes you have trade off's in order to keep a strength that's hard to get......such as a good nose for extremely tough conditions........or extreme hunt versus handling.
Once I determine a dog exceeds the "fault threshold" those dogs are culled quickly......I can't bring myself to clean up crap for and put good food in a bad dog.
Dr. Chris,
I may be wrong, but I have taught my kids not to get attached to a pup until its determined if it will pass the "fault threshold". I have 3 of my four children that get involved with the dogs and when they decide who's dog belongs to who.....they start assessing which dog is a good hunter......It's sort of cute, and they joke amongst themselves saying......"dont get too attached to that dog Rachel, it wont even get in the brush"..........

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
simple, if dog makes me mad
gone, if dog is ok
will keep a little while,i want to be happy with my dogs. what really makes me happy is a pile of rabbits
what makes me mad is having to holler at my dogs to get in there & hunt, shut up, come & stop fighting
if a dog minds well hunts hard & can run a rabbit that is what i like, does not have to look good but that is what i prefer
as far as the wife & kids buy a pup or two then start culling. when you dont put them for sale on here & tell everybody they are not a cull just making room for pups
if you have all the good dogs you can handle why get a pup? e to sum it up if they aint worth bragginbg about they dont make me happy

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
when i have sold a dog it is for this # 1 reason-----------------i bought it off the internet and the liar that is selling it says all this and that and i have to re-sale it and i geve good info on it and lose money. I try to call person i bought it from and always they disappear and never call you back. Now since i watch em run first or buy from someone i know has good stuff ive not had that problem and i dont sale to much either. I will raise my own in most cases now and only now and then get something that i know is what im looking for. Up until about a year or so ago when on here i sold tons of dogs and lost tons of money. There is tons of dog traders on here and will climb a tree to lie to you rather than stand on flat ground and just tell the truth. This is what happened to me. Look at most on here that is respectful folks alot of them breed there own or have or starting too. Just dont buy if u have not watched.JMO and that JMO has costed me alot of money.LOL. People will keep doing it because they always have and always will. Each generation has them.

Dogs that doesn't put meat on the table or earn their keep in the field. I don't trial that much, so keeping a world beater isn't one of my top reasons to keep a hound. I like a hound that is tough, that can be put on the ground from hrs on end and still have the desire to go run. I like brains, nose, desire to hunt, and most of all the consistency to go in and out every day and be the same!!!

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
I'm new to beagling, and only have two beagles. A big branko male that tears it up, can jump, run and circle his own rabbits, although he's a bit into trash so I've been working with an e collar on that. I have a six month old small female out of progressive pack bloodlines, but has not started yet. Right now I just wat to have fun. I want to be able to let my dogs down anywhere and have them search, run and circle with all their hearts no matter the conditions. I like my dogs to know basic obedience in the field. I would like to do a few trials and hunt a little, but mostly enjoy running them throughout the year, so my dogs don't have to be perfect, they just have to suit me and try their best!

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
No one has yet to admit that they have or have previously owned a dog that for any number of reasons "simply struck your fancy". The light in it's head flickers but has yet to come on so that the dog starts well. Long story, short. You are not ready to give up on the dog. It may have been a pup from a breedung that you made and felt certain that it would be a "winner".
Most of us have had one at one time or another.

Re: Why does it stay in your kennel?
I only gave away two dogs of the 10-12 beagles i have owned.. I keep all my dogs because i get attached but now i know to not buy a dog i dont like first...
lucky or unlucky every dog i owned has died before it was old, a fire/hit by train/stolen/lost 1...
copper my oldest mutt beagle makes me want to spit bullets and kick old ladies will stay in my kennel because he has character but i removed his man parts...
my pup mya is gonna be in the annals of rabbit dogs that you wish were in your kennel one day
so i figure i'll breed her instead of buying anymore dogs
ok i exaggerate but she is a good friggen dog
