You need to have these in your Vest!!!!!!!
My brother's female got in a snare body trap today around her neck!! Had we not just had a pup get in one and knew they were in the area she would have died. We sprinted to her after we heard her squall out and she squeaked again and we both knew she was in one! When we got there blood was bubbling out of her nose and she was going limp. We both worked hard to get some slack to get her loose just as I said "Mike get some movement on that thing cause she is going out!" Her eyes rolled back in her head just as he got the snare loose enough she could breath. She stood up and we worked another 3-5 minutes to get her completely out!! She shook it off and was back in the brush about 10 minutes later. Had we both not been there she would have died a horrible death in that snare. CARRY A PAIR OF DYKES(WIRE CUTTERS) IN YOUR VEST!!!!!@!!!!!!!
HOPE THIS CAN SAVE SOMEONE ELSES HOUND AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT EASIER ON BG, she is obvously a pretty tough hound.
Man it was terrible as we struggled to free her. THE DYKES WOULD HAVE CUT HER RIGHT OUT!!!!! My brother was sick at his stomach thinking about it after!
Safe hunting to all!!!!!

They are bad. My dogs that have been in them stop when they start getting tight, and sit down.
I guess its where mine have all been on tie outs quite a bit.

Sorry but I gotta ask........
If you already knew there were snare traps in that area then why are you running your dogs there??? Obviously there is a good chance of them getting caught up in one since it's already happened twice to you guys. What happens if the next dog just doesn't make any noise when it gets caught up in one?? Is it really worth the risk of losing a dog over? We showed up to one of my best spots a few years back and could see a fox caught in a leg trap in the hedgerow a couple hundred yards down.........we put the dogs back in the box and went to another spot.
And doesn't your state have any laws about posting an area if someone is trapping it so guys like us know when there are traps set in a given area?

The first one appeared to have been set and left with no tag and stuff was grown up around it. The one BG was in was further in the area. We hunt where we can and when and I agree that they need to be marked, but I dont think they have to be. I have the snare in my truck and if the guy doesnt have permission to be there trapping my brother will be on his porch!! BOTTOM LINE, CARRY SOME CUTTERS WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!
Had you not seen the fox in the trap you would have kept hunting, right? You would not have known the area was being trapped unless told or visibly seeing the traps. I assure you, the snares are well camoflauged. SAFE HUNTING TO ALL!!!!!

Blood bubbling out of the nose
, I took my cat hounds out of two snares this winter and they were both setting there like they had been leashed to a tree waiting on me to come get em, no worse for the ware. If your dog had blood bubbling out of it's nose you better go have it's lungs checked cause it has some kind of infection or ran a stick into it's lungs or something cause no snare will cause that.
I've only snared a few hundred fox/bobcat/coyote and NEVER seen one blowing bubbles, maybe a little blood in there mouth from chewing brush or cable but that is it.
If the snares were hung illegally turn them in to the local CO, if and when the guy gets caught maybe he will have his licence revoked, who knows it could be a beagler trying to remove some predators from a good bunny hole
.
I do carry a good pair of dikes with me while hounding just for the removal of snares but have never had one that I couldn't just open with my fingers. Better yet go to your local trapper and have him show ya how a snare works and while your there mention you have a few favorite honey holes and you run beagles, maybe he will try and avoid your area.

I feel for you guys as I just ran across a illegal conibear my dog had his nose inches from, it was set in an open bucket on state land and you can't do that. Bunnyblaster I seen nothing in the rules about posting a trapped area, I've seen it done up north but I don't think it is required. Corect me if I am wrong.
Re: You need to have these in your Vest!!!!!!!
It was as tight as could be around her neck. i am assuming from her struggle she ruptured some vessels and make her nasal area bleed. She was bleeding enough it was all in the snow. Had my brother not know how to loosen one up she would have died right there with us trying to get her out. She is a big strong female and went nuts when it tightened up on her. No, he is not a rabbit hunter, just a trapper and we have no issues against him unless he was trespassing to do it.
Re: You need to have these in your Vest!!!!!!!
When I coon hunted I always carried a good heavy pair of dykes as I learned the hard way about being without them. I had a BIG 75-80 pound Bluetick that got both back feet caught in the top heavy strand of a hog fence. We were in a nite hunt and he had started a track but shut up and didn't say anything for quite awhile as the other dogs continued to pound the track. I knew something wasn't right so another guy and I started to where I heard him last. After calling for awhile he whimpered to where we could hear him and when we got to him he had both back feet twisted in the top wire strand. As I said he was a big dog but not ill in any way so I thought we could lift him back over the top of the fense and free him BUT he about ate me alive when I tried to lift him. Neither of us had anything to cut the wire so we took turns bending it back and forth until we got it broke. He had the wire embedded pretty tight and could barely walk when we got him out. I took him to a vet first thing the next morning and he had not severed anything but he had to be laid up for about a week. I had forgotten about that until this post and I think I'll get that old pair of dykes out and put them in my hunting jacket. I doubt a beagle will ever go over the top strand of a fence but when you least expect it, expect it!

Re: You need to have these in your Vest!!!!!!!
I have had two beagles that would not try to go thru a fence but instead they would jump it and I have had one of them to get hung up in the fence like you mentioned and yes he tried to eat me up when I tried to help him and that is why I don't like a jumping beagle. This male was 15" plus but the other jumper that I had I let my uncle keep her and she stills jumps fences if she doesn't see a large hole right off and if she is running a rabbit the first thing she does at a fence is jump and she is about 14" so that started me putting cutters in my pocket.I had forgotten about that until this post and I think I'll get that old pair of dykes out and put them in my hunting jacket. BC, you are right about the fact that we would have continued on with the hunt not knowing the snare was there. But you can also bet your bottom dollar that I won't take my dogs to a place I've been stung at before until or unless I know there are no more on the property. Running across one that someone either accidentally or intentionally left out that is over grown and has been there for a while is one thing. Continuing to take your hounds to a property that is actively being trapped is just asking for trouble in my opinion. Obviously the first trap you came across would not lead you to believe someone was actively trapping the area..........you left that part out in your first post. But now that you've had 2 dogs caught will you continue to visit the same property?? And is this public or private land??
This sentence of yours is my only point. Yes, carry some side cutters for the "just in case" stuff but I personally wouldn't temp fate and run in an area that I think may have more..........again, JMO. Either way I sure am glad you guys got both of them out ok.BCBeagles wrote:Had we both not been there she would have died a horrible death in that snare.

Steve, I had a dnr officer tell me that...........but that doesn't always mean they're right. I've gotten bad info from them in the past. And this particular one specialized in the fish/water area, not hunting. I'll have to look and see if I can find. Before the only thing I knew for sure was the traps have to have identification.steve w wrote:I feel for you guys as I just ran across a illegal conibear my dog had his nose inches from, it was set in an open bucket on state land and you can't do that. Sounds like there's a few good reasons to carry side cutters huh??

if you cut a fence be sure and fix it and let the owners know why it was cut, thats the main reason landowners around here have stopped letting people hunt
