Pups that start back tracking??

Hey guys I have a buddy and his pup is about 7months old. The pup is doing pretty good on wild rabbits but the other day the pup made a loose and started back tracking. We chased her down and cut her off before she went to far. This is the second or third time she has done this but she also has ran a rabbit in a circle back to us. She is a very hyper and energetic pup. She is going to be medium fast to fast speed on track. I was wondering if she would come out of it or will it get worse. Thanks in advance.

Was she tounging on the back track? I have had pups back track silent before after a loss, more to check on me than anything else. If she is running it just as hard and barking, it could be a life long problem. I would run her with a older slow dag that is a good role model. Even if the pups is faster, the old dog will come along and correct her at the loss. If the scent conditions are right, all dogs will back track in the heat of the moment, especially if they are in a brace or pack.

I use my tri-tronics beagler on the low setting and give them a knick (only when I am possitive they are back tracking)

The pup does give a little mouth when back tracking but not very much. Hopefully the pup will grow out of it. Thanks for the replies.

Hey Jeremy, Hope Sky is doing good! My advice is put her up for about a month. Then Take her out by herself a couple of times. She's still young and is probably just really excited. Then like the last fellow said take her with an older dog just be sure it's not a fast dog or her competative side will make her do it again. I know it's hard to leave a young dog in the pen for a while when they have started and you really want to run them, but with my experience it does them a lot of good. Hope this helps. Scott
