12-20-2010 Hog/Cattle Farm hunt - 13 on the tailgate

Post by Joeyman »

we had another great rabbit hunt today. But boy we are sure tired. We've been hunting for 3 days staight. dogs are pretty worn out. They've got about 22hours of ground time on them. Seems like it doesn't phase my big male Khan very much. He still had search in him and pulled me from the truck to the kennel on the leash when we got home. Before I unloaded hounds I cleaned up the kennels. Got all the old straw bedding out put fresh straw cleaned water buckets filled up with fresh water made sure it was all nice. Feed them double their feed and they crawled into the hole. I probably won't see them all day tomorrow.

We hunted this farm last year and was invited back again. A total of 16 or 17 rabbits were jumped today. Few of them made a straight line to the hole. One ran under a fence thru the cows and into the barn..lol Straight shot. We also got into a couple covey of quail. I was able to get one and my buddy got one. I had shot another and winged him good he went down but as he was going down he glided very far. I couldn't find that quail. We had a fun time. Was invited to another farm he owns that has a fair amount of rabbits. Planning a day for that soon.

Some of what we were hunting in. We also got a few funny looks from the cows....lol

Joeyman,

No offense really, I do like reading your posts and what not but why in the hell do you feel the need to kill so many darn rabbits? Most folks go out and kill 5 at most yet here you are again year after year slaughtering them in large numbers, is it a macho thing or what? I can't for the life of me figure out why a guy would need to kill that many rabbits time and time again. It kind of saddens me to tell you the truth. If we had to many guys like yourself out there along with all the natural predators we already have we could pretty much kiss the future rabbit hunting of our children goodbye forever. I guess a lot of us just don't have that big of an urge to kill. Good hunt Joey but five on the tailgate would have made all of us smile just as much as 13.

If he is hunting areas that are not hunted hard by other hunters, he ain't gonna hurt the population none.

Maybe he's not out there to make you all smile.
I have a couple farms I kill around 20 rabbits year in and year out. I also have some farms i set my limit at 5 or 6. Doesnt look like he's hurting his population.

Hey JOEY, Next time just kill what u want but only put 5 on your tailgate and take pictures. That way it makes everyone smile and feel warm inside :D

Fellas I've read most of Joeyman's threads over the last year or 2 and it doesn't sound to me like he over hunts any of his spots nor do any of those rabbits go to waste. Now he could be feeding us all a line of crap but I doubt it. He's also said at least a couple of times before that on some of the farms he hunts he takes the landowner(s) with him and he may end up only getting a couple or none of the rabbits for himself.........and only hunts those farms once or twice a year. I can't see where that would hurt anything myself. It sounds to me like he knows some nice folks and is a nice guy himself so he's got plenty of different spots to run that don't get hammered by everyone and their brother throughout the rest of the season.

Joeyman, I think some guys(myself included) get a little jealous about the number of spots you have and the number of rabbits you seem to run. You just keep doing what you're doing............we've been down this road before with people getting on you for shooting "too many" rabbits haven't we?? I'm sure if and/or when the rabbit population goes on a downswing you'll cut back on the harvest a little...........I know that's what we've done here.

The MDC gives us a limit for a reason. If they think we are killing to many rabbits they will change it. Where Joey is hunting there are plenty of rabbits and he is not hurting anything. Keep filling the tailgate up Joey!!!!!!

The limits set by the Departments of Conservation usually become a goal for most hunters rather than the management tool the are meant to be. I guess if they felt that it needed to be lowered they would, but if its like Michigan it would be after a total extinction of the species in question. Why would any feel the need to kill that many rabbits is beyond me but it does look better than just a couple on the tailgate, I know that I wouldnt be nearly as impressed if say there were four or five.

Does this really give you a free ride to say whatever you want about someone? I tried that with my wife once and it didn't work. LOL.

I love reading Joeyman's posts and he strikes me as a responsible hunter. If a place like this is only hunted once or twice a year then there is absolutely no reason not to shoot this many rabbits.

I personally, don't see a problem with it as long as all the rabbits are getten eaten. What pisses me off is all these bar hunts with four man teams that go out and kill every thing they see, than toss the rabbits.

lol...yesterday their were 4 guns on the ground. I only killed one rabbit. the other guys that own the property had me bring my dogs they killed most of the rabbits. I just guide the dogs for them. They don't own dogs.

Thats how i get on these farms. :approve:
