Hey folks, how many of you run at night ? What problems do you encounter ? Anyone use bells to help find the hounds ? Do the bells really help scare away coyotes ? Any input appreciated ?

I have ran beagles at night in the summer for years. There is usually find more rabbits out at night,and the running is usually better too.
I do not recomend young dogs running at night, for obvious reasons. With most dogs it takes a little adjusting to runnen at night. After a few times out your dog may become more bull headed ,. the bells do help for locating the dogs, do bells keep coyotes away,most likely not, but my dogs wear them, NOw if you could get the local coyote houndsmen to run there coyote dogs with bells, yes they would work fo sure.
In the summer we like to build a fire at night ,drink cold beer, and ,cut the dogs loose in a swampy area that boarders a standing cornfield,they run rabbits most all night long, good way to get a dogs in shape too.

I don't run at night often, but in the dead of summer it is about the only way. Couple things to keep in mind - First it is harder to tell if the dogs are running off game so make sure your dogs are broke. And there is more off game out and about at night. Second at night the dogs will often get all kind of crud in their eyes and you will need to clean it out of their eyes or they will swell shut - guess that kinda depends on where you are running. I typically run in scrub field and cut-overs. I do use bells at night, but then again I almost always use bells.

The only problem I have ever had at night was coyotes. I run with bells 90% of the time and they came right in on the hounds

"Train them under the moon and break them under the gun"

Nothing is better for a young dog than night running. If they are going to run deer they will just as easily do it in the daylight when the deer are laying tight and get up right in front of them. At night deer are moving and most time will move off from the hounds instead of jumping out of a bed right in front of them. Of course a deer runner could care less whether he is running by sun or moon he will chase them the same without predjudice.

I run nights alot year round,but don't do it for training young dogs cause it seems they don't have to get in the thick stuff and learn to jump a rabbit.Rabbits are up and about at night and I can usually get one going immediatley.Great to sit back and listen to a pack under a full moon.Also it seems that the rabbit stays above ground longer at night.

I RUN AT NIGHT THE ONLY TIME I GET TIME TO RUN BECAUSE OF WORK. THE RABBIT WILL STAY UP LONGER AT NIGHTS AND THE ONLY PROBLEMS I SEE IS YOUR DOS WILL TEND TO HUNT A LITTLE WIDER.

I do both.

I run at night all summer and during the day the rest of the year.

Yotes are a problem but usually we can get to the dogs if there is a yote comming in.

Some ares are think and nasty and I avoid those at night.

I like to run where I can get to the dog quick if I need too at night.

As far as deer go, well I have had the fortune of having broke dog usually by the time summer hits.

Do you just listen for the yotes barking to bring your dogs in at night?

We need to offer more money to those coyote runners...I hate those things! A friend of mine said he saw someone in a white van dropping them off in Ohio where he lives. They already breed faster than rabbits. We don't need the gov. or whoever dropping off more.

I'd run them myself if I had the money and time to.
