Met SCBeagler and his Dad Steve this morn.Went to his honey hole, I guess we walked 45 min and never got a thing going thought I was gonna have to pull a Dave Clucky and wind Shantie`s ears up,Never heard her open so much. Surely would have got some minus points. Went around a pond ,went to about an acre briar patch and ran 5/6 rabbits out of it.SC shot one his Dad shot at one and missed. Seemed like they had a hard time runnin it for a few min`s. Guess it was the powder smell, least wise I`m gonna stick to that.
These blue tails would go in the water come back out ,run the gully`s n pine needle`s they were dry and go back in the water some of the running was good and some fair they did the best they could I guess and I had a good time. Looking forward to going again but I`d like to take all my dogs next time.
SCB hope your wife has your new rabbit huntin buddy soon. Maybe Xmas
Thanks Again

Chuck, I don't personally know, but always heard them bluetails won't get out and run, heard they called them "scooters" as they ran about like a pregnant doe.
I remember Mike Yates talking about hunting them on the islands when the river flooded.
Could that have been the problem...?

SR, last year thats all they did, today was different for what ever reason,as we got to the truck I kicked a cotton tail up,SC had took his gun off and it ran across the road in front of him, dogs couldn`t run it they tried but nix. Like my brother used to say some days are diamond some days are coal.

My experience with Bluetails here in NC is just that, they run and squat, twist and turn, and do alot of tricks. I watched one get jumped one day and then hop up on a three foot stump. When the dogs got close he dove off about 6 feet away into a big briar thicket.

You said that right ! Although their strategy of squatting sometimes fails and they get eaten. It takes a little more careful dog to run Bluetails right.

For the last four years bluetails are mostly what I have run, they love the briars and water. They will slip around tacking in front of the hounds if they have no pressure on them, but if your hounds can put pressure its always a race to remember, they don't run long distance they just know were the thickest nasties briar thickets that are covered in water and thats were they feel safe, seen a many swim like a otter and pull tricks that a fox would be proud of. The best way to kill one is surround him with hunters, if you are hunting alone or with a partner 90% of the time old bluetail will slip out the other side and make it to the next thicket, I have run the same rabbit many times for over two hours before you even see him, hunting bluetails here if you a'nit bleeding you a'nit hunting. Hope everybody a safe season, take a kid hunting.

We had one that ran between 2/300yd circles, came out of the water twice the last time he went back they couldn`t do any thing with him.I thought it was over a couple times and got everything out except my Shantie female, next thing ya know she would jump him again. They are a challange to any mans hounds. All in all I think my hounds did a pretty fair job.
