Tricks of the trade ?????
It has been below 32 degrees for over a week now. Any tricks on keeping water to dogs?

32 is balmy weather. I try to water at least twice a day and carry water when I go hunting. Dogs get very thirsty while hunting in the winter. Some people use water heaters but I like to keep fresh water for my dogs at all times.

heated water bowl at tsc $20 I have to fill everyday. They drink alot and I beleive some may evaporate. The pails hold mor water but will freeze if more than half full. Bowls are the way to go.
Re: Tricks of the trade ?????
During the winter months I pour warm water in their dish with the feed. I also bust up a lot of ice, and water dogs at least once or twice a day. I do not fill up their entire bowl that sits outside. The water that they do not drink will freeze, but it is not as difficult to bust out. I have never tried the heated dishes. Keeping hounds is a lot of work, but I am sure everyone on this board knows that.

I use the rubber equine bowls, don't fill them all the way, and when they freeze just turn them upside down and step on(or stomp) to knock the ice out. And yes I water twice a day.

I got electric on every pole at the kennel but I'm afraid of them chew'n them buckets up and getting shocked...
I put warm water over the feed and change the water buckets when they get full of ice. I only put about 4" of water in the bucket each day so it takes about 4 or 5 days with no thaw for them to get full. I get a good price on the buckets at work so it's not an issue...

Re: Tricks of the trade ?????
I do the exact same thing a SR Patch does. I use the black flexible rubber gallon buckets so when they get full of ice I just bang them against a tree out by my kennels. The ice will bust right out of them and I start the process all over again. I only have to pack a gallon jug of hot water to the kennels when I water. One day I may get electricity out there but this has worked for years.

I used to use heated bowls there were the best but my kennel is to far to run extension cords this year and i didnt run electric out there yet so Ive been putting it in there boxes and its been keeping it dethawed at below freezing and i always put warm water with feed inthe winter as well.
