Beagle Fox Hound Running
For all you people out there who like to run fox with beagles, this one is for you. I have finally put together a pack of 6 fox runners that, last night just put on a show with a little extra thrown in. There was a 3/4 moonlit night and absolutely calm. About 40 degrees here in Michigan. The dogs jumped a fox about 7:30 and the race was on. They were doing a wonderful job when an idea flopped itself into my head: the fox was crossing the paths and two tracks all around me so why not try for a quick shot with my 22 revolver. I got in a crossing area, switched on my LED competition light and waited. Shortly, the fox hit the crossing spot and gave me about a second and a half to shoot. I did so eight times. I must have clipped him because when the dogs hit the road, all hell broke loose. For the next 2 hours they ran to catch. It was fox and dogs just nip and tuck and I got to see about 12 more crossings. They finally ran him down and finished the excitement.
For those of you who consider this trash running, pardon me but It was such a great run for me that I had to share it with the people who may have an interest. My dogs are all over 15' and are mostly northway, pacesetter, and branko open colored hounds for night time viewing.

Your feeding them. Have them run whatever you wish. Sounds like it was an exciting time!
Re: Beagle Fox Hound Running
I field trialed running walkers for 25+ years on coyotes & fox, no telling how many we caught (red-side grays) in towns and around homes and released on our 10,000 acre lease away from homes. we kept feeders out year round and i really do miss the fox races with walkers. i never shot one because i wanted to run them the next time out. i was running my walkers every 4 days rain or shine. if i went to field trial the weather did not matter hounds had to run and mine knew waht rainfall & thunder was. placed in alot of trials and hopefully i can figure these beagles out one day to know what crosses the best with other bloodlines. DANG, I MISS THE WALKERS AND FOX RACES!!!!!!

chascmp: Your life with foxhounds sounds exactly like mine. Started with coon hounds, then the price of coons dropped. Ran foxhounds all my life until there got to be just too many houses and people to enjoy it. Went to beagles and rabbits and still do the rabbits but around our area they are mighty scarce. Plenty of foxes though so I have been trying to get the right kind of beagles to run them. You would be surprised at what it takes to be a good fox beagle. Most beagles will run them but few, have the "want to" to stay after them long. Especially in the winter when there is lots of snow and the fox stands out and runs so much better during the day time. My dogs do pretty good on rabbits but the chase just isn't as tough or exciting as big fox on the go. If a person hasn't tried it, come on over.

I ran with Buck a few months back. We had a fox race that night also. His dogs do run fox very well . They were absolutely pounding. Very good race. We went in pretty deep to catch them and it was really hilly for this fat boy. Ole Buck has as much bottom as them fox hounds of his. Had fun Buck , we'll do it again.

Dad was a fox hunter all his life, he would rather hear a beagle on a grey than a rabbit.

Dave 404, brings back memories eh? I was born in Ky and ran fox with the big dogs. Switched to beagles in Michigan. The trick with beagles is to know when they are running a fox and not a rabbit. I run rabbits predominately but every now and then I just want to stretch the boys out on a fox. Much better than a hare and lot more required. Course, as Wireman said above. sometimes they get after one that doesn't cooperate and you have to go real deep to gather them up. All part of the game I guess.
