If you are a serious trialer/hunter, what is the best blood out there TODAY, to put in a breeding program. I hope to here some of the older, and successful trials that have been there and done that. Hoog, Ferrell Smith, Scott Music, Denny Dugan, ect. People who have seen and bred many litters, to help the younger generations on what to breed for.

It looks like the older more sucessfull trialers are out running their dogs, instead of sitting at the computer.

I here that! I put it on here hoping to get some insite to younger people or people just starting. I have been trialing for around 8 years and seen some of the best hounds run. I might even learn something but am pretty set in my ways. This post can make a legend for some of the experienced beaglers, to some people who read it. Some of us out there don't know Hoog has finished 16 dogs just in AKC. Music has finished at least 5 but I think more. Ferrell Smith a ARHA legend with help from others has built a strong weedeater line. Don l finished several and has been in it 20 or so yreas. Denny Dugan has ran in UKC and Exploded the AKC world with field Champions in just a few years running in the AKC world. Wags has bred several awesome hounds. Has had great ARHA success. Earl Brunner has won the arah world several times. Just point out things that might have caught the eye from a running stand point. Also why they might have culled a hound. Most of us do know the answer to these questions, but some don't. It is for the non-kennel blind fella always looking to improve the sport he or she loves.

p.s. I think I have more respect for the Kentucky part of the Northway Hound. Dexter was a nice guy for not blasting me over pauls last name, but I struck a match to defend HIS line. He did it WELL!

I don't think there is any best blood line out there. I believe some work better than others for that individual trialer or hunter. I truly believe with a lot of thought and hard work, any body could make a successful life breeding any type of beagles that can compete in the field of trialing and hunting. I personally like the Ranger Dan and Striker line. I like the consistent running they produce, they have the foot I desire and tons of brains and nose!! But thats just me!

Going to have lots of opinions here.

Opinions are welcome. There is more to breeding then just chance. You have to have a great foundation. Not a good bitch, a great bitch, and not just a good sire a great sire. If you breed good dogs , you should be able to kill rabbits over them, but if you breed great dogs, the pedigree will win out. There will be exceptions to the rule and not every dog in the litter will be great, but you chances are there.. What is the best foundation today. What have the older people had to breed to because the turbo powered is dead, Ace, Lumberjack ect. What was the reason for it. What did you see in the hound to make that decision. Hoog, Music, Smith, ect can't always go to there back yard and breed. They do try other successful studs. Is it the pedigree, the way the dog run. That is what I want to no. That is what young people should no. Pedigrees don't run rabbits, but they help to see the successful dogs that could. When you breed success, it usually wins out.

I have to agree. I like some of the old cottontail lines that go back to Cress. They have smarts and hunt. Easy to get speed, hunt and brains are much harder to pass on. I also like the Blueback Breeding and Spicers Stuff, but frankly it is only in a few Kennels now.

I dont think its about just a line but more about what you want and finding that hound, I dont care what paper your trying to run, because all that i have seen has good and bad, I like the northway & turbo but not all are great! I have seen good and bad in all lines I have looked at and watched, Dont get me wrong I like a good ped, but the hound has to be as good or better than the ped. Your best bet is to watch alot of hounds before deciding on a line, decide on the style of hound you want to run and go from there. Then get you a great hound and work your breeding from there using the ped as just a tool, and breed to another great hound....its not easy.but done right is worth it...

I start with what i like and for me thats turbo blood, because i like what my male is producing.First and foremost it doesnt do any good to breed the best producing female to the best producing male if the pups are going to sit in the kennel all the time.You can take an average dog as a pup and make it great by time in the field.This also works the other way great prospect not worth a darn because it never got ran.When i start my pups i dont let up on them they get ran all they can take and then some,thats how they become great dogs hands down..

I agree, also only run with good hounds, alot will say they have great hounds and in the field the dogs show their not. Its easy for a hound to pick up bad habits from other hounds.

I agree with a lot that has been said. I have turbo mostly for the hunt and desrie. They also have a big nose for the most part. I usually through in a little LumberJack or Some Hard Rock for the brains and line controll. It has worked good for me. I still would like to see more info on breeding a good foundation or good bloodlines. Keep your thoughts coming. I really do think though PEDIGREE has more to do with it ,than a lot of people get it credit for.

I have to agree with John when it comes to Turbo's. This is the best bloodline I have had and i have owned several out of Turbo by Turbo that where super tough dogs. I owned Sport for several years and I can honestly say he was the best i have ever seen. My personal choices are Turbo by Turbo, Turbo Super Sport, and Reggie bred pups.

Jeremy, I guess i dont understand the question.Is there one dominate bloodline out there? I would say no, there are some kick ass hounds out there but dominate, dont think so.There are a couple of studs out there that i am wanting to try but, in my honest opionion u can not go wrong with , Shooter,Tuna,Trails.Its always hard too compliment a bitch and correctly head in a direction that will pay off in 3 generations.People breed for different things, example====all i hear is i got a jumpdog!I aint seen a handful of jumpdogs in years yea some will jump rabbits but ask somebody thats see a true jump dog day in and day out there a sight to behold period, Track hounds in 97 i lost the grand nationals to a dog walking the road while my dog hunted once the rabbit was up i lost by a check, hmm. I just think too many get wrapped up in this and that and forget the real purpose of a beagle, there bred to hunt dont matter what speed that was the initial intent.I can tell and show a fault or two in any hound, i dont care what it was including mine.But with that being said if i could see just one dog go, ahh since we are wishing 2 dogs=====Mt Zion Pete, East Coast Trimmer.Mapel Valley Kennels has tried as hard as possible To stay as Close As Possible to T-Rex And Mt Zion Pete,once again i dont breed to sell.I bred for me and if there is a pup or two sure i will sell em. Too me every cross u make as a breeder should be as good or above the parents when its all said and done, Jmho and i am sure most will disagree.

The way I feel about a ped is that it is another tool to use, I have looked at some great peds and the hound was trash. I run Turbo as well, and like them a lot, they cross well, on my Northway hounds I like Dexter s stuff and spur driver blood.But like its been said you have to run em if you dont you ruin em.
