heat stroke??
I was reading some other post on here and saw that heat stroke was one of the highest reasons for a dog to die,at what point is to hot to run a dog?? and will the dog it self not just stop and rest when needed??? I had dogs outside of the pen all my life and never lost one to heat stroke.

Re: heat stroke??
Honestly if a dog is a true rabbit dog they will never stop for a break JMO. Im not sure what is to hot i have ran dogs in 100 degree weather for 6 hours and havent had a problem as long as they are made to drink. Just use your best judgment and it should be ok to run

Re: heat stroke??
Just my thoughts - Dogs, other animals and humans are all individuals. As such, their tolerance for heat , cold, pain, specific food, etc varys. The condition of the dog must be factored into the equation and then It is virtually impossible to say at what maximum temp it would br safe to run a dog. Prevention being the better part of cure, be as considerate of your dogs health as you are your own.
Like Beaglerof4 states, you have to do what is best for the dog because the dog does not know. Wishing your hounds many safe runs.

Has a lot to do with what kind of shape they`re in to start with.I had one have a heat stroke but she was out of shape and over weight.did not kill her but she could never run long in the heat after that.
Re: heat stroke??
in this kind of weather when its real hot take plenty of fresh water n let them have their fill when they come in sometimes we have set water jugs in different spots n keep them filled they need water in this kind of heat i lost one to a heat stroke im shure thats what it was we were running at night too we had ran for 4 or 5 hours just about non stop was on way back to the truck seen one of my young males stumbling at first thought it was snake bit but he never did swell just kept going down hill even his coat turned a dull color after about a month he died had him to vet 2 or 3 times they couldnt find any thing wrong i belive he run so hard n long that night with no water thats what did him in be careful in this heat n take your dogs some water ive seen guys on here brag about their dogs running in this heat for hours with no water but each dog is different i wont take no more chances any more jb

Re: heat stroke??
Like was stated before dogs are individuals, lots of things depend on how much heat they can take. Conditioning the type of food you feed. I run in the heat but slowly get them used to it. I usually try to run by ponds when its hot.
A good dog will not quit, you have to pick them up. I have seen them go down in the back end and drag their self to keep running.Don't be afraid to catch them and take to water and let them soak. Another thing I solo that way they are not pushing each other so hard.
Bragging about running your dogs hours in the heat with out water is brain dead, why would any one put their hound in danger like that, just to blow up their own ego.

Re: heat stroke??
I have a male that was 6 years old that had a heat stroke and he`s 8 now and when it happened i was running him with faster dogs and he was trying to keep up with the faster dogs i picked him up he was slobbering and couldn`t stand up he`ed full over i put him in a cooled creek and he seemed to come out of it. But now when it gets around 70 and hotter he just can`t run long before he`s panting hard and starts to stagger around i give him a cooled drink and wet him down then he`s ok again. But my dogs are like my kids i wouldn`t ask them to work in 100 degree heat and i wouldn`t ask my dogs to if its over 80 i wont take my dogs out till evening and then only run them for a couple hours. The rabbits around here are under ground in that kind of heat any way or they just run to a hole and stay there till it cools down all the rabbits i been seeing are out after 7:00 and thats when its staring to cool off.

Re: heat stroke??
Some dogs that have a strong desire to run won't quit to take in enough water. As the poster mentioned above, I also had a bitch that would run at 100 degree F. She would quit, take a break for some water, then go back and run some more. I thought all was fine, I didn't realize it but she was ruining her kidneys and she died about a month later. High temp and humidity is a death trap for hounds with a strong desire to run. Be careful.

Re: heat stroke??
all good posts,i guess the bottom line is, dogs are like human athletes, some are sprinters, some marathoners. In either case , they must be conditioned to perform in adverse conditions. It is up to the trainer to use common sense. Why endanger the dog?
