Randy, our dog Lucy, Josh & Steph's dog Dewey, Jeff Leonard's dog Shelby and Dan Alford's Sandy dog all advanced to Sunday. We all got beat the next day except for Jeff's Shelby. She placed 3rd and won NHBA's big ol' trophy for high-scoring female!!!

Congrats to Jeff & Shelby

Good seeing you guys down there!

Randy,
Did you go down to the AKC Midwest trial you were talking about going to in KY? If so, what did you think and how did your dogs "Fit in"?

Congrats to Jeff & Shelby!

See you all soon,

lol, Aaron, you trying to get me in trouble? It wasnt me mad....it was judges in my cast fighting about how to score each others dogs. UKC judging is so confusing and complicated......I dont mean to sound critical, but it just isnt my cup of tea.

See you soon,
Randy

LOL!!!! I knew what you were tring to get at.....Just wanted to see you type it!
Im going to go to a UKC trial one of these days once I get time to brush up on the rules and my handling skills. I cant speak for the UKC Beagle trials because ive not been to any but ive done my share of judging and handling in the UKC Nite Hunts and ive got a pretty good idea what your talking about. Ive seen a good handler and a average hound go a long ways!

you have put the handle on ukc trials. When you said you have seen A good handler and A average dog go A long way.I HAVE RAN UKC TRIALS SENSE 1956. It was that way back then also. The really good dogs did not need any help back then. But now evan they need help due to the handling skills of todays handlers. Roy

Congrats to Jeff / Shelby....She's a good one and I've told him so many times.... He's got the BUG....

What's so difficult about UKC, is the scenarios are never the same and sometimes it's hard to apply the rules to those scenarios.

Some people tend to over analyze a situation and end up getting tunnel vision. I saw it that way and that's the way it is....

I was in a situation this weekend. Where a dog trailed over a marked line, (but did not open)...you can go both ways. He did trail - nose on the ground, did he happen to luck over the line, or was he really trailing. It didn't affect the score, but you can see how it can get confusing... especially when you're learning and there's noone around to show you the ropes..

Suzay, Mr.Pasmore or any of you other UKC regulars...........you ever see dogs get picked up for rough running in UKC?

As an example, A cast this weekend would have a loss and be searching, after a minute they would go into a check and then about 20-30 seconds later dog A would open 150-200 yards away...3 dogs were still searching where the rabbit was lost at originally but pulled out to Dog A barking.....the handler of dog A wanted a check recovery, handlers voted no, too far away............but the race was ruined because all the dogs were pulled to Dog A which wasnt even barking near the oriiginal rabbit. My question, by UKC rules did dog A do anything to warrant a warning for rough running or is this what is expected of the dogs?

Thanks,
Randy

I'm not Suzay, but I'll share my experiences. I wouldn't consider it "rough running" per se, since the dogs were broken down at a check and not really running. The hound ranged out too soon to suit the handlers and was overruled on the awarding of the check, which seems appropriate enough. That may fall under some other infraction, but.... Rough running to me is when a hound is consistently out of pack mode while the trail is being followed, cutting corners, and off the line a lot as they come through for speed and drive points.

I have seen handlers warned for rough running hounds and I've seen hounds picked up for it. I saw both warnings and a hound picked up at either the Nationals or the World Hunt just this year, can't remember which, tho'. The handler was in agreement and understood. The dog just didn't look good that day.
