Michigan Permits for Dog Training Areas

I'm checking into having a guy get a permit for his property to list it as a "Special Dog Training Area" so we can run our dogs there during the quiet time from April 15th - July 8th. What if anything do you guys know about having this done? Is it a real hassle or no big deal? Is there any reason why an individual can't do this? I see they ask for the "organization" on the permit, do you have to list one? I printed off the application and I'll be calling the DNR on monday but I wondered if any of you have had some experience with this and if you could give me any help with it.

Yeah, it's illegal to train our dogs then unless you are on a property with a permit from the dnr.

And who was the God that decide on this because the last I read there is only one all mighty and with his Grace I pray he will let me through the Golden Gates other than that you should have the right to run your dogs on a permission property if you want to, And with out hunting ,running dogs, mushrooming,Fishing and other outdoors activty There is really no Need for DNR,Game Wardens because the money that comes from these outdoors sports ,and if you are hereing right Sports,so next is Basketball,Football,Baseball ,should not need a permit to run your SPORTING DOGS ,YES SPORTING DOGS We do nothing wrong just because other people have nothing to do but set around and complain about what other people enjoy doing if you notice I never said any thing about Golf as far as I see it is the most  Sport I have ever heard of but I am not going to set around and make up some kind of permit or money making rules if the people who made this rule or law up want QUIET TIME I have the answer for you its called a NURSING HOME and if you want that my 2 sisters work there and there is room for them. And I hope that things change.............................

Here in PA we can train year round but our beagle club must have a special dog training permit. We renew it annually. I believe (in PA ) that you have to obtain permission from the neighboring property owners to initially apply for the permit. Now we are just on a renewal. Just a way for them to make a couple bucks I guess.

Bunnyblaster,

We used to get a permit to run during the closed season on Federal land. We had to meet with the forest service offfice director. According to the regulation he showed us we had to run it as a competition. They permitted us to do it 4 consecutive days a week, they required a posted start time, a sign in sheet, a minimun of 4 people. We even had to make small road sign directing people to the location. The guy even asked us what we were giving away for prizes. When we told him that the dog that does the best will get a "good dog" pat on the back, he laughed. We had to list every date that we were going to run. Once all this information was completed, the head of the Michigan DNR had to sign our permit. Yes, we had to have to have an organization name......use your imagination there......maybe your kennel name.......

We did this for several years....they did check up on us from time to time. The biggest challenge we had was keeping our dogs in the designated sectionswhile running hare in the spring.

Depending on who you deal with, some officers may like the idea and be very helpful, others may be turned off by it. Tread lightly and figure out the best guy to deal with. If you go in demanding or with agressive posture you wont get a permit. It will involve officers doing you a favor to get all the necessary signatures. Hope it works out for you. Send me a PM if you have specific questions, Ill try to help.

sbadger,

As human populations grow and our wildlife areas turn into subdivisions things are going to change. Im sure there are many things houndsmen could do 50 years ago that they cant do now for various reasons. Im sure some of the laws we have now that we didnt have 50 years ago are needed and serve there purpose. As diligent, responsible houndsmen I believe we need to embrace the responsible legislation and unite to protest the bad legislation in an orderly fasion.

Im not in favor of restricting the running season. Not convinced it has much of an effect on rabbit populations, although Im sure it has some. I would much rather they decrease the daily bag limits if populations are endangered. Maybe even open a season on predator birds.....

Contact Reddod1, he has a permit for his runing pen. I don`t think there is a lot of garbage you have to go through. The state has made it`s self God over every thing we own and do. I think you have to renew it every so often.

Yes I do have a Special Dog Training Area permit. They are not hard to get and believe it or not their free. You just need to contact Casey M. Reitz , Permit Specialist, DNR Wildlife division. Phone # 517-373-9329 or reitzc@michigan.gov They will send you an application. It will ask a few simple questions like name of land owner, Address of site, how many acres, type of wildlife species that will be trained on, type of dogs to be trained. The only thing that really cost is the signs that you have to put up every 150 feet. I had a sign shop make mine. It cost me around $175.00 but the signs are reflective and show up really well. They are made of aluminium and should last a long time. you have to remew the permit every 3 years but the DNR sends you a renewal form about 3 months before the other one expires. I will try to get a pic of my signs.

Hope this helps

The quiet time is for all hunting dogs not just beagles. It's supposed to allow game to raise their young without interference. I wish we didn't have a quiet time.
