Had a bluetick coonhound that was neutered. He was a pretty decent hound till he passed.Never seemed to make a diference in his hunt. Dogs that get fat and slow are the ones that are not getting hunted.

A dog's sexual reproduction system is for reproducing -- has no effect on hunting ability.
The only hunting effect is has is on females you spay, no downtime from heat cycles hunt 365 days a year............Cant' say neutered males won't bother females in heat as 2 of the 3 cut males I have will tie up with females in heat -- at least they shoot blanks.

I do not understand why anyone would castrate a hunting dog that they were going to keep. I believe if he is a "keeper" then he is likely good enough to sire a litter of pups for me.

I have 5 males and 3 are cut........Don't plan on breeding those males, so no use for their nuts.
One I have is not fit to breed because he has Hip Dysplasia.......just cause he is not fit to breed doesn't mean he's not still worthy of hunting.
The other 2 I had cut because I had no plans on breeding them - Not because their not fit for breeding. One of them sired a litter in 2007.
Hell, after my 3rd son this past summer, I do not plan to sire another one and gonna get cut myself as well.

Thanks for the onfo. The reason I am asking,is because I sold a male and now the guy wants to sell him.I was going to buy the dog back but he had him castrated. He is on hell of a dog.I would have never did it.Thanks

People will do it for health reasons, for attitude reasons and if you're like my sister then sometimes for no reason at all. I swear anything on her farm gets castrated if it crosses her the wrong way......

..........no matter pet or livestock.
Some people have zero interest in breeding so they never care if the dog is cut. Personally I wouldn't do it unless I had a real reason but then again I don't keep males anymore either.
