this has been on my mind for a while if you breed a gun shy female to a gun shy male will the pups be gun shy. I have heard yes and no which one is it.

Re: Breeding 2 Gun Shy Dogs
I agree 100%. Every cross made should be considered based on how it could effect the breed in the long run.PREACHERS,KENNEL wrote:i wouldnt breed them or anything to them and wouldnt want anything from them .
What if you bred them, and a pup wasn't gunshy. Someone breeds the next generation, and guess what pops back up. Breeding dogs with a serious fault is always a serious mistake.

Re: Breeding 2 Gun Shy Dogs
Nearly every gun shy dog I ever saw was made that way by stupid owners. The only one I can think of otherwise was a people shy dog also.

I have been waiting for someone to tell you- no dont do it gunshyness is herditary! I suppose that if you spent enough time trying to melt it all down in your head you could convince yourself that it is genetic and therfore you shouldnt breed these dogs. I really dont have much use for a gunshy hound myself, but to each there own.

Re: Breeding 2 Gun Shy Dogs
If you breed these dogs, never shoot around the pups until one day when they are running a rabbit, and then start blasting away with a 12 gauge, then yep. The pups will be gun shy. If you understand before hand that the pups will need some extra training and take the time to do it, then no. The pups won't be gun shy.
My question for you guys that say to shoot the gun shy dogs is this: Do you shoot the deer chasers too? Breaking a dog from being gun shy is easier than breaking one from chasing deer. If you want to eliminate the tendency for your pups to need deer breaking and gun shy training, then blast away by all means. Both traits can be passed down to the next generation. The best dog trainers I know like to start with dogs that don't need much training. But then, if you have a 22 and an extra 5 minutes a day, you have everything you need to make sure your dogs are NOT gun shy, no matter how they are bred.

42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.
Re: Breeding 2 Gun Shy Dogs
Alot of variables with a gun shy dog. I got a young male awhile ago that when you shot a gun he was gone.I hunted him all summer and by season you could fire a gun he didnt care he was hunting and turned out to be one of the best dogs I every ran. Had more patience then got him for free and was happy I had a beagle. Some dogs need to trust you and you cant help if someone else screwed up the dog or however it happened . The dog wasnt born scared of guns. Jump shooting over a dog or shooting when they are standing next to you will scare the hell out of some and some could care less. If both dogs ran the way you like a dog to run and you did decide to have pups I would take them from the dam as soon as possible for one and I always play radio near whelping area so pups get used to noises. Dont just breed them to have pups... JMO

Re: Breeding 2 Gun Shy Dogs
Ive seen guys breed gun shy dogs time after time and if you start geting the pups aquinted early i have never seen a problem i dont belive that it is inherited i ive also broke many from this most of the reasons are owner related are from other owners not being gun hunters and the dogs are not familiar with a gun. and from owners not using their gun wisely when there young like shooting several times when there not running if they are good dogs breed them my opinion just because they dont like a gun dont mean they are culls not everybody carrys a gun
