I have been finding the Garmin GPS tracking units on e-bay for $489 and less. What gives? Is the price coming down or what? Most other sources are well over $500. I also hear that other folks may be coming out with similar units. Anyone have any facts?

I haven't heard that yet but I'd still be hard pressed to buy one until they can incorporate a shock collar to go along with it......or at least until I can put both units on the same collar to start with so the dogs don't have to have an additional collar on their neck. My buddy calls it a Mr T. starter kit when he sees all the electronics getting put on a dog.

They have been for sale on ebay for that price for about 3 or 4 months now. I'm assuming a wholesaler is selling them at cost or something, not sure. Like taking the middle man out of the sale. I am going to buy one but just been waiting to pull the trigger, maybe til end of summer now. Who knows by then I could get one for 400 or have 2 or 3 to choose from.

I bought mine off e-bay last spring for 525 with one collar and recently bought a second collar off e-bay i have had a few questions on it and you can get right on Garmins web site and e-mail them any problems you might have and they get back to you within a day. For my money i wouldn't be without it where i hunt it's big woods when there isn't snow down deer hunters get lost there all the time with snow thats near impossible but the garmin will sure make short work of getting to the road the quickest, it keeps track of the distance your dog has travelled in a day and at what speed and keeps the same info on the person carrying the reciever. If your hunting it makes it easier to get in front of the rabbit because you can see where they travel the most, alot of times i will run my dog(s) in the wild near my house while i am working on my honey-do list and i can tell exactly where they are at a glimpse, wouldn't trade it, if you can get it for $500 i say have at it.

Are they really necessary for cottontail, or do most beaglers use them because they run hare. I've just started lookin into one, but im not thrilled on the price. Although i did see them on ebay like was mentioned earlier for 489 with free shipping. If i knew i was going to get one for certain i would "buy it now" on ebay.

Jackalneck: They are fun but, necessary? I don't think so. I run a lot of fox and sometimes could use one but generally, my dogs are close and don't run deer so I know where they are. I have owned several tracking devices and generally found them to be cumbersome and just another thing to carry around. They don't seem to work as well in the UP or in the heavy cedar swamps. There is one made in Europe that looks real nice and cheap but it does not have much of a range. Much smaller than the garmin. Someone on here will know of it I am sure.
