Hey did you read this article in the Virginian Pilot today! Just something for you to read.
SUFFOLK
A Windsor man received a suspended jail sentence today for buying wild rabbits from an undercover game agent.
Douglas M. Arnette Jr., 45, got six months for each misdemeanor of buying wild animals. Arnette purchased eight of the animals - three one time and five the next, a Department of Game and Inland Fisheries agent said in Circuit Court. The judge also ordered Arnette to serve 40 hours of community service, part of which must be devoted to "animal matters." The $160 the man paid for the animals goes to the department for further investigations.
Arnette, a member of the Hampton Roads Beagle Club, purchased the animals for training dogs, said prosecutor Susan Walton. With no previous criminal record, Arnette will return to court in August for a review to see if he's completed his community service.

Sad but true, it is illegal to buy or sell wild animals in most states(dead or alive) he didn't get fined for putting them in the pen, just for purchasing them which is illegal. You gotta know the game laws or at least know the guy you are buying rabbits from. The game officers in suffok must be bored as hell to set up a sting on a guy for buying rabbits. LOL

Yea thanks for the heads up.I talked with the local game warden the other day which has been snooping around my pen and asked him directly about permits and trapping rabbits and he told me that it was illegal in the state of Va to transport live wild game.I started buying redbacks and going to start raising my own because I sure dont want the g-man in my business. You cant do nothing without the goverment sticking there nose in your business.I dont understand how folks that run fox preserves but game for there pen but I cant but a harmless rabbit.Anyway thanks again for the news,I have had about 5 other folks call me and tell me the same thing.

Talk about a waste of taxpayers money, seems like to me they could do something productive but they got to worry someone to death and make this sorry state some money!

Yeah they most definitely must be bored, but oh well! The way the fox pen gets away with it they have a permit with listed trappers on it who they can recieve game from they can't pay them for the game but can reimburse the for time and wages. You can read all this on the VDGIF website under permits foxhound training preserves. So did the GW tell you any regulations for rabbit pens? Got 5 acres trying to fence in but want to get details of regulations before I start.I have heard good and bad things bout the redbacks, but as long as they run and don't get caught who cares. I have some arkansas reds and something else mixed up that i am gonna start breeding in a couple weeks. So see what happens, two weekends of season left so time to push the hounds hard the last few.

The man told me as long as I used farm raised rabbits it was no permit needed.I have had good luck with redbacks as long as you turn them loose young or even put them on the ground as soon as they are weaned, the trouble is hawks and owls, they have eaten I dont know how many of my rabbits in the last few months.Once they learn there is rabbits in the pen they will be there day and night perched up around the pen waiting.I am adding on to my pen soon so I can keep more pups at the time.If you builda pen make sure it has plent of the thickest cover you can get or you are wasting your time unless you have a nonstop supply of rabbits.

yeah i definitely have the cover, it's about a 8 year old nasty swampy briary cutover. Just trying to find the right deal on wire. What you use for wire and where you get it? Talked to a buddy that has a pen and told me to get the vinyl coated it was best way to go but can't find it close by for a decent price. Been looking at the 1" wire mesh six foot tall at agri supply just galvanized

I believe they call me up about 7 years ago but wanted to buy rabbits.Said they would pay 40 dollors for each rabbit.I might had been born at night but not last night.I don t sell rabbits.
thats a foolish law.Catch a rabbit in a box and have to kill it.And you don t want to kill it just move it to a save place for the dogs not to get run over.NC was like that but they change it.Just cannot go over state line.

Well for one im glad to see they caught this hardened criminal,im wondering if he had a crippled one eyed horse with saddlebags full of neer beer and baby aspirin waiting in an alley so he could escape the Gman. They can sure put them taxdollars to good use!!!! Seems to me like theirs a whole lot better uses for our money than worrying about somebody with a few rabbits. Bet you couldnt melt and pour them on a car thief or a rapist!! To bad we have to put up with stuff like this just trying to run and train dogs Donald

This goes back about 10 years ago, the Michigan DNR had a sting operation going in the U.P. They were selling snowshoes for stocking Beagling clubs. They caught many people, confiscated pickups, guns, and gave out big fines. I think all were reduced and trucks given back, but that is chickin SH$%t what they did in the first place.
