Just looking to see what some guys use for bait for rabbits. I want to catch a few to use to start a pup. I used cracked corn before, but its not doing the trick. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I always used a quarter of an apple in pyramid traps.

what is a pyamid trap?

I use wire rabbit traps baited with sweet potato slices and over ripe apples. Spring time seems to be the most productive time to trap after the little ones are weaned. Trapping near the pen is ideal since rabbits do not do well being transported. The quicker the rabbit is released, the better it's chance of surviving the shock of being trapped. Pyamid traps are said to be a very good choice, but a bit pricey.

Granny Smith apples have always worked better than anything else for me, they must give off a little more smell.

I use alfalfa in the winter works every time

Take some apple juice and warm it up on the stove then dilute some salt in it then pour it over that corn in the trap. The rabbits like the salt smell the juice and eat the corn. A guy showed me this so I can't take credit but it works great.

I use Red Apple slices in Havaheart traps. Have you guys ever traped a rabbit in one area and then relocated it to a running area to train your dogs. I was wondering what the rabbit does. If they do not know the area do they circle anyway, and do they stay above ground longer trying to find a hole? Just curious about this reading about catching and releaseing rabbits and wondering if this is worth trying as I have rabbits in my neighborhood.

I have a friend who traps rabbits all winter long, all over our county, he transports them in burlap sacks, puts them in comercial rabbit cages, and keeps them until spring when the cover in his twenty acre running pen gets thick. He traps around twenty a year like this, and has no problems keeping them healthy for months. Of coarse you cant let any animals around the cages, but they just sit there like a domestic rabbit while you fill feeders, and waterers. He uses apples, and catches most when there is snow on the ground.

Thanks for the info. Wish i would have got some alfalfa tonight at tractor supply. i'll get some at the feed mill tommorrow.
