rabbit to fox.
I have got a big oversize male beagle that can run a rabbit, but is just not running well with my pack.he has never ran a coyote or fox,but I would like to try and train him to run them.has anyone ever done this?
Re: rabbit to fox.
Most dogs will naturally run a fox. Finding a fresh fox track and encouraging him to run it is likely all it will take.
Running coyote is another story. Most dogs are timid when it comes to running a coyote, especially if they are running solo. Your best bet with getting him to run a coyote would be to find a beagler that runs coyote and let him pack in with them.
He will likely never run a coyote solo, but he should run a fox by himself.
I dont reccomend the fox/coyote enclosures. Totally different sport. Most if not all dogs that run the coyote pens are wothless on the outside.

Re: rabbit to fox.
there is a 40 acre fox pen over north of harrison. i havent been there in a few years but it used to have some good running with many fox. oh yeah, there were horses running loose in it also
so an shock collar should be used so you dont have any horse races
i dont know if he keeps it open in the winter or not. it probably depends on snow amount and cover for the fox. if you want i can find the number for it. i dont think i have it anymore but sure i can make some calls and get it.
i have had good luck starting dogs in enclosures but after they start put them in the wild. too much pen running can make bad habits, it is no different than using a bunny pen. one foxhound i still have was started in pens and then even became one heck of a bear dog. not all pen runners are worthless

Re: rabbit to fox.
thanks for the info. now I have another question. how big of an area will a fox normally run,and do they usually circle back?also does a grey run the same as a red? I`m just trying to get some kind of an idea of what to expect if he takes one.thanks for your help.
Re: rabbit to fox.
In my experience, the greys don't run quite as much as the reds. You can expect a couple mile circle from an adult red (or grey at times). They do circle it seems, but be prepared for long jaunts by the dogs.

You need to hook up with bucks better beagles on here. He loves the big males on fox. I'm sure he can get you started. He lives down in Stockbridge, Brian.

Well my dogs will blister em. There aint many where i run but if they hit one and it makes big circles like a rabbit, i been known to let em rip----------No pun intended.

When the moment of truth arrives, the point of preparation has passed.

Re: rabbit to fox.

We do some yote running but its not with beagles. There are guys around the Eaton Rapids area I think or maybe Charlotte some where south of Lansing anyways that run them with their Patch beagles. They kill a good number of them also.
As far as running fox there is a nice fox pen up North PM me for details. I wouldn't be scared to start them in the fox pen but don't leave them in there long after there started. Get them out in the open for some training. Expect to walk a lot of old tracks until you get one jumped. I'm not sure on the beagles or how well they would cold trail a track from last night. Our hounds will take a 12 hour old track or so and cold trail until jumped. However we walked them on a lot of old tracks before they caught on. But its a blast have fun with it!!
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.

Re: rabbit to fox.
I love running fox.... I almost would prefer fox over yotes but there doesn't seem to be as many of them around. Fox will usually stay in one section as where a yote might line out and go across four sections before he decides to come back. Yotes are a blast and I love hunting them but a good fox race with shorter circles is a lot of fun also. You need to have a lot of permission lined up before you start running because you never know where you might end up. It has been our expierence that a grey will run shorter cirlces than a red.upperlimits wrote:thanks for the info. now I have another question. how big of an area will a fox normally run,and do they usually circle back?also does a grey run the same as a red? Re: rabbit to fox.
Thanks Brian for the plug. I run fox for the sure pleasure of it. Also, will run with anybody if they come down. I am always looking for a good fox hound. Bought what I hope to be a good one, today. Grandpup out of Reggie.
Upper Limits: Fox with beagles is a lot like hare with beagles only better. If you do it properly, a fox will run around and around maybe 1/4 mile circles. If you spook him, he will go somewhere safer. It is different in the winter than it is in the summer, of course. We got about 5 inches of snow last night so today should be perfect. By the way, while most beagles will run a fox, it takes a special one to stay on him for 2 hours of more. They have to have tremendous endurance and some degree of "want to". I would say, most beagles are good for about 30 minutes and then the fox will drip them.

Sorry, didn't mean to say "drip" in my post. Meant to say "drop"
