Cold weather

Just started rabbit hunting last year with some friend who had dogs. I got my first tow beagles at the end of the season last year
They have turned out to be good dogs.

I would like to hunt this weekend with my co-worker but he says it will be to cold to hunt rabbits with the dogs, the low will be about 15 and the high for the day 20-22 so what do you think. I have been told the best weather is damp and about 35. We never hunted real cold weather last year it was a mild season. This may be a dumb post but remember I only have last year to go on. If you think the weather would be ok or good, then are there any precautions I should take with the dogs in this cold weather.

How is the hunting in cold weather thanks Dave?

It all depends on the dogs, we have some 10 month old pups that ran last weekend at 5 degres and did pretty well for pups. You won't know if you don't try. Let us know how you do.

I've been hunting in that same exact temperature range without a problem. If your dogs are over competitive, You might want to leave in in the truck and try just hunting with one at first. Good luck

That's a good temperature to run, I'll run a pack at that temp. Once it drops below zero I'll run 1 or 2 dogs to the most but anything about zero and they all go down

Thanks guys any day hunting with the dog is a great day.

My dogs are not to competitive they complement one another well. One is fast with a good nose but can over run it and the other is not as fast but has a great nose. If the are hunting apart from one another they come together at the first bark. If the fast one over runs it the slower one gets the check and put them back on it. Great to see I will not be a waste of time in the cold weather.

Thanks Dave

Thanks to you guys for talking me into going out in the cold weather. I talked my co-worker in to going with us. When we started this morning it was 14 degrees with about an inch of snow

It turned out to be a blast, by far the best running my 2 dogs have had so far no kidding in three hours we ran 10 rabbits it was nonstop. May not sound that unusual for some on here but for just getting started with my own dogs it was a great day for me and the dog.

We were hunting a hill that is full of brier patches and supper thick. It was hard to get a good shot in this thick stuff with the rabbits on the move. Today we got the hard part down, good gun dogs running rabbits. Now if we could only learn to shoot in the cover we came away with just one rabbit WHAT A GREAT DAY.

THANKS AGAIN GUYS DAVE
