I had a couple of guys from out of state ask me to share a picture of our Bluetailed rabbits. We also have the cottontail rabbit. Other names that I've heard the Bluetail called are Swamp Rabbit , Marsh Rabbit , Swamper and Mud Rabbit. They live in wet areas and have webbed feet, they don't grow to be as big as the Canecutter or Snowshoe Hare. Note the Blueish tint under the belly and tail.

If you have never run the bluetail I will tell you from firsthand experience he can be one of the most frustrating little bastards you have ever seen, He will slide around never running at all just tipping along and going in and out of the water, if you can ever get him to go to high ground he will haul, but he prefers to just slide around in the nastiest marsh area available, staying just in front of the dogs, sometimes making a double and passing within 5 yards of where the dogs are coming up the line. A couple of years ago, we were hunting them in eastern NC and my queen dog that is in the avatar threw her head up in the air and proceeded to swim out into a flooded timber area. I stood there watching and when she got about 30 yards out there was a little tuft of grass, when she hit it, the rabbit shot out hauling tail. That rabbit was sitting out in the middle of a flooded area on the one little tuft of grass that wasn't under water. She was a true jump dog, and I truly miss her in my pack. I can still here that chop mouth of hers Ike Ike Ike Ike barking every breath on a rabbit, and throwing it like a machinegun when she would sight jump one. She will always be my measuring stick on jump dogs, because she could make a rabbit. RIP old girl. If I remember correctly Dalepea from the board was hunting with me that day and Alan buster also a board member was hunting with me that day.

Mr Bluetail can make a seasoned pack of dogs look just plain stupid, mine included. LOL Some places we hunted had a mixture of bluetails and cottontails, you could always tell when the dogs were running a bluetail, because the dogs would stay brokedown more than running. You needed a dog with patience to consistenly run them and kill them

I'll second Big Dog's comments on bluetails. They can make you want to pack up and go home. They nip & tuck more than any rabbit I've ever seen.

If and when they do get up and run, they can make for an exciting race. Just know that when they decide to sit down, they go back to slip & slide mode. They can sit really tight, and break from cover without you hearing them.

I hope we get into some tomorrow. LOL

we use to catch alot of them down at the beach before condos and sand were'nt worth anything. they would squat n the saw grasssome times to long and they would grab 1 on occasion that was 35 yrs. ago . but turn right around and u would declare u were never going back.

That is too funny. I'm stuck at work on the day after Thanksgiving and that's just the kind of laugh I needed.

I ran one this morning that made the mistake of going in a hole under a tree in standing water. I couldn't figure out why the dogs lost him till I saw a couple of the old dogs going to town trying to dig him out.

Well, long story short, after a couple minutes I heard him squealing and I grabbed Mary by the back leg ( the only part of her body I could see) and pulled both hound and rabbit out of the hole. At least he made a tasty treat for the hounds after the hunt was over.

I was with Big Dog on that hunt and that jump was pretty incredible. We went on a couple of hunts that had a mixture of the two and the blue tails are hard on a dog. The hunt that Big Dog referred to was the first hunt that I saw a rabbit swim and that is pretty neat you have see it to believe it.

I remember it too. What a way to break in a new dog. This was my females first hunt. She is still with me although she couldn't do what those dogs of Kims did. She is better today and I still have her. Who finally shot that rabbit? Anyway a fun day to remember.
