What is some thing you like to see different at trials?I done a trial sat and I and one more judge it and I told the guy that randy and I were not going to be together judging these dogs.We will get together at the end.A man came to me and he does lic AKC trial everyweekend and said I like that. That one thing I don t like at trials two judges being together and trying to stay up with the dog and they get tire easy. Why do they need two looking at the same thing.Spread out might see more.

There are a few things I would like to see.
From trialers I would like to see a little bit more sportsmanship, if you get beat shake the winner's hand and accept that you got beat that day. Don't whine about how unfair the judges were or how much better your hound is than every other dog that was there that day just accept it and move on.
From the gallery marshalls, I would like to see a few more notes taken on which dogs are hanging out at the gallery when ever the run breaks down. If they are doing nothing when they should be searching report it to the judges and the dogs should be pulled. A dog that doesn't search is a dog that doesn't hunt and is not bettering the breed.
From the judges just remember that trials are promoting a hunting breed, I don't care how fast a dog can go for 200 yds if they can't keep a rabbit going for more than 10 minutes straight then there is no winner, find out who is responsible for the break downs and pull them out regardless of how fast they are when they are running.
From the clubs I would like to see different judges at the clubs, there are alot of judges but it seems that 90% of the trials are judged by the same handful of guys. If you can't get different judges than every other local club just switch which class they are judging, if they did 15" males this week then swap them to 13" or females the next week. If you start seeing questionable judging don't hire that judge again, a club with a reputation of honest trials will get you more entries than running a buddy trial.
Overall the trials are great I don't want to come off as a hater, I do like the trial system but I think it has strayed a little but can get back on track easy.

As FTS I made 27 phone calls to get 8 judges......yeah, it is the same group of guys in each federation willing to judge and small group of guys running the classes will gripe anyhow no matter who you have judge. The majority of the few that will judge will not judge the same class (or day) they normally run. Any other ideas??? Sounds easy enough to do right.....would like to know where you are getting the quote "there are alot of judges"....there are several with licence but very few that are willing, therefore as FTS you must fall back on those who you know will show up, are honest, can run, and are qualified.

I honestly think it would be easier to get Hooters Girls and Hotwings than a vast variety of judges for each trial....lol
It is a whole lot easier to play FTS from the arm chair than it is to step up and be FTS....yup, it is....nobody is happy with ya but there are pats on the back at every step of the way, don't mind the wispering behind ya.

Don't believe me, try it sometime....all FTS's from every club need a big round of applause, not recomendations on what they "need" to do from guys who have never tried to put a trial together, yet many are happy to reap the benefits from it.

At AKC trials I would like to see them measure the dogs before the hunt

Ohiohntr,
I know what you are talking about. Twice I have had to scratch my dogs so I could judge the class of dogs for "no shows".
I don't blame you one bit for going with judges that show up when they say they will. Its one thing to cancel a couple weeks ahead of time, its quite another to cancel the morning of the trial or worse yet, never call, just not show.
I look forward to judging when I get back this spring, but your right again, its not reasonable to expect a guy to drive 6-8 hours for a trial and have to judge the class of dogs he runs just so the pennut gallery is satisfied that the judges are switched out enough and the same guys are not judging the same classes.
As far as changes, I would definately like to see the FC running more. I would like to see the best out there week after week, if that means I cant win then I guess I will have to step up my game.....I dont see that as an excuse to stay home and bash the winners.
In large pack trials I would like be able to get inside the running grounds to see the hounds run. I understand you cant have handlers and observers scattered all over but some trials manage to keep the gallery together and offer some viewing opportunities.
Would like to see the midwest take the winners pack to a brace. Goes a long ways in showing everyone that you have selected two of the best. Exposes poor judging and highlights the good ones.

I understand what you are saying but in the same aspect you also generally hear FTS saying that entries are down and they generally blame everything under the sun for the entries dropping ... gas, economy, weather, the moon is too far away...... but when it really comes down to it alot of guys are discouraged in the way some things are going. I think this is what really helped out all the new federations starting up, people didn't switch to UKC or ARHA becauase they thought that the AKC run trials were going just peachy. AKC's answer seems to be the advanced judging seminar and I really don't think that's the right answer. Enough whining for me I gotta go run dogs

Amen ohiohtr !! the field trial secretary is by far the hardest job in the club. It also comes with all the critisism and badmouthing about the judges. I applaud all the FTS out there and encourage you to keep up the good work. Without you, the trials wouldn't happen.

and without entries from the whiners as you stated the field trials would stop it seems like know one can ask a simple question about what to do and someone answer without someone else coming in and starting a bash about arm chair or whining beaglers what gives it was a comment not a accusation lighten up and lets get together to better the breed instead of finding something wrong with everyones post.

Exactly, the clubs will continue to complain about low entries, the trialers will continue to complain about how trials are run and in the end it is likely that nothing will change.

We see now what some would like changed at the trials, Now comes the hard part......What are each of you going to do to help fix that part.......
Will some of you go attend a judging seminar and call the FTS and volunteer your services so we can get more variety in the judging pool.......will some of you start bringing out your FC's.......Maybe some dont have the time or are physically unable to judge so maybe you will start showing up to the classes your not running in and offer your services as a marshall or FTS.
Your right dixie dog, nothing is going to change unless guys start getting more involved and put their actions where their ideas are.....we have the same thing in churches, schools, and communities today. Everyone has a grocery list of things to change, services they would like, but volunteer NOTHING to help fix it. Dont worry about what everyone is going to do to help, Im starting to think about what I can do to help.......
