I bought me a beagle pup about 4 months ago and have been reading this forum ever since learning how to train him to be a good rabbit dog. Anyways I have started experiencing the Highs and Lows and I thought I would share for enjoyment:
HIGHS: Last Thursday Night after one of those long 50+ hour work weeks I decided to take my 6 mo. old pup out for a little night running so I grabbed me a 6 pack of cold "adult beverages", my fold out "hunting" chair, and my pup and headed out to the field. My pup has been running rabbits pretty good for a little over a month but this was the first night run we have done. I sat down in my chair, "popped a top", and listened to the BEST sound I have EVER heard, the sound of my 6 mo. old beagle opening up and running a rabbit in the dead of night. It was the most relaxing and enjoyable way to end my week, nothing else seem to matter anymore and the smile lasted all weekend!
LOWS: My pup and I were on our routine morning run out in the field around my house (I work nights so we run for a little while between 9am - noon) it was about 10 AM and we had been running for a little while and my pup had just lost a rabbit so I thought it was a good time to change the area we were running in. I called my pup and started heading to another part of my place when we crossed paths with a SKUNK my pup was in the cover about 20 yards to the left of me hunting for a track determined to find another rabbit. I hoped my pup wouldn't come tracking back to me but no sooner did I have that thought when he came circling back to me right behind that skunk and I am sure yall know what happened next...My little pup got a first hand smell of skunk right in the face! He came running out of the brush whining and rubbing his nose in the ground! I spent this rest of the morning bathing him in tomato juice and "skunk" shampoo!
So in less than a week I went from my HIGHEST enjoyment to my LEAST enjoyment this is the "fun" of beagling and I have to admit Iam enjoying every minute. I enjoy reading this forum and look forward to meeting some of you when my pup gets old enough to trial or hunt.
