Measuring help please !!!

Post by JUDE »

Ok where does the stand need to set on top of
the dog for a correct measurment ??? If it's on
top of the withers , then where is the top of the
withers located ???

Is it on his neck or behind the neck where
the body levels off ???

I'm starting to think this measuring thing is
GARBAGE exspecially when I get measurments
like 14 , 14 1/2 , 14 3/4 where does it end :angryfire: .

Thanks for any and all advice ,
Buddy

Bench the dog and then place the stand legs almost even or an inch back behind the dog's legs. While the dog is standing "proud" lower the gage to the whithers {almost at or right below the shoulder blades} and look up on the gage for your size. {Nice pictures by Flood Zone Beagles}

Below is the definition and location of the withers:

http://dogs.about.com/library/glossary/bldefwithers.htm

If you are inquiring about how to measure in AKC, below is the rule book from the AKC web site on beagle field trials. Go to rule 3-D on page 25:

http://www.northamericanbeagle.com/contents.html

AKC does not mention "withers', it speaks about the "shoulder blades at it's hightest point". It also states that the dog shall be in "it's natural alert state", not stacked like in a bench show. My dogs' natural alert state is not with the head way up and standing on their tiptoes. There is a measuring differnce between the two stances. "Bench show stacked" is usually the higher measurment because the dog will stance on it's tiptoes which is not "it's natural alert stance". Remember this is AKC, not other formats rules.

Laneline does have good pictures but this would not be allowed in AKC events. The problem I see here is that the measuring sleeve is already in place while the dog is still under measurement. This allows the judges to see the measurement while measuring the dog and this makes it too easy to measure a dog in or out. I'm sure these pictures are for a training guide on how to place a stand but maybe other formats allow this.

Hopes this helps,
Da Chief

The place you measure is where his back comes into his shoulder or withers not on top of the withers at a normal stance
